  • Patent number: 5127632
Abstract: A gas flushing device includes a ceramic refractory perforated brick extended through a refractory lining of a wall of a metallurgical vessel. The perforated brick has an outer end having therein a recess opening outwardly of the vessel. A ceramic refractory gas flushing stone is fitted within such recess. The perforated brick has a portion that covers an inner end of the gas flushing stone and that projects therefrom inwardly beyond the vessel lining toward the vessel interior. The projecting portion of the perforated brick has a gas permeable region confronting the inner end of the gas flushing stone. As a result, gas passing through the gas flushing stone to the inner end thereof then passes through the gas permeable region of the projecting portion of the perforated brick into molten metal within the interior of the vessel.

  • Patent number: 5062613
Abstract: A BOF sublance hoist system including a two speed hoist drive for rapidly moving the sublance through a non-critical distance above the molten metal bath within the BOF and then slowly moving the sublance through a critical spotting distance for enabling safe insertion and withdrawal of the sublance into and from the bath. The drive includes a first electric motor for rapid movement, a second electric motor for the slower movement and an emergency air motor to be used in place of the second motor in the event of electrical power failure. When the first motor is in operation, the second motor is shut off and its brake is set. The reverse is true for times when the second motor is operating. A planetary gear system which is driven internally by the first motor and externally by the second motor serves as the gear reducer for permitting power transmission to the hoist drum to be achieved through operation of either the first, second or third motor.

  • Patent number: 4989841
Abstract: A metal continuously melting and retaining furnace including a retaining chamber which retains therein a molten metal fed from a melting chamber, a ladling chamber from which the molten metal is ladled out, and a treating chamber between the retaining and ladling chambers and having means of producing bubbles of a molten metal-refining gas and means of stirring the molten metal. A molten metal inlet port between the retaining chamber and the treating chamber and a molten metal outlet port between the treating chamber and the ladling chamber are disposed so as not to face directly to each other. In addition, a bubble baffle plate stands on the bottom surface of the treating chamber near the molten metal outlet port so as to oppose thereto. This makes it possible to provide a molten metal with a good yield, which is refined to a higher degree and is most suitable for producing a high quality thin cast product by casting.

  • Patent number: 4893791
Abstract: An automatic lance changeover device is presented wherein a radially guided ring is axially vertically displaceable by two lifting spindle systems provided on each side of the ring and bears pivotable hooks for receiving the lance and for pressing the latter axially against a sealing surface on the coupling head. The hooks are connected to the stationary coupling head via pivotable connecting rods whose length is alterable, these connecting rods being eccentrically articulated on the support pin of the hooks with the bearing bore at the coupling head end of the connecting rods having a larger diameter than the associated wrist pin. When the ring is axially displaced, the hooks, which have swung out, in a first phase, initially surround the supporting pins on the upper part of the lance as the ring is displaced further, the hooks, without executing any further pivoting movement, pull the lance head into sealing contact with the coupling head.
