  • Patent number: 5402990
Abstract: This invention provides a method and appratus whereby steel of various compositions may be produced from iron ore and coal through a series of stages without the intermediate production of liquid iron. A reforming reactor receives top gases from the steel making reactors, and converts them to high reduction potential gases which are returned to the steel making reactors. The iron ore and reductants, such as coal, are charged to a controlled atmosphere reactor which may be an inclined rotary cylindrical shaft. From the controlled atmosphere reactor the charge is moved to a potential shift reactor which is inclined or vertical and encounters increasing heat and rising gases for converting the carbonised sponge into a semi-molten state. The charge then passes to a high temperature reactor where it encounters the reducing gases from the reforming reactor and preheated oxygen to create temperature in which steel is made.

Abstract: Sub-lance installation for carrying out measurements and/or taking samples in a metallurgical furnace, has an elongate tubular lance which is rotatable around its longitudinal axis and is attached at its upper end with its longitudinal axis vertical to a carriage by means of which the lance is moved vertically, the installation also including means for rotating the lance about its longitudinal axis. In order that the rotation of the sub-lance can be achieved by a robust apparatus, which does not itself require power and can operate automatically, said means for rotating the lance comprises a helical guide system which imparts rotation to the lance. The helical guide system comprises mutually cooperating helical projections and recesses mounted respectively on the lance and a guide for the lance.

  • Patent number: 4719073
Abstract: A process and apparatus for measuring and regulating the variable pressure furnace gas chemistry is described. The method makes use of mass spectrometer measurements, in the preferred form of the invention, in which gas species percent composition is obtained quantitatively independent of total furnace pressure variation. Using such a real time measurement capability, active control of batch process furnace operations is possible by intrinsic measurement of the part outgassing rather than by assumption of batch part status as a function of extrinsic parameters such as temperature and total pressure. Thus, by a combination of batch process temperature ramp control and variable admittance of suitable gas into the furnace, uniform batch processing is possible by closed loop control, due to renormalization of furnace residual gas chemistry from day to day drift and from batch part chemistry variation.

Abstract: This process and this installation permit taking samples of blast-furnace gas from a series of orifices (T1, T2 . . . ) located at different levels along a generatrix of the body of the blast-furnace. There are performed, in sequence, operations for preparing sampling lines, operations for the analysis of the gases in a device (G), and pressure measuring operations in a pressure sensor (P). These various operations are managed by a programmable automaton (A) and the data obtained are used in a computer (C) in accordance with an embodiment of the installation.

Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for manipulating and handling sampling tubes in relation to a metallurgical vessel. The apparatus includes a generally vertically oriented guide frame, mounted for limited tilting about a horizontal axis. Rails on the guide frame permit a carriage to run thereon, the carriage will carry a measuring lance. A tube manipulator is pivotably mounted to the guide frame, and includes a tube holding structure for holding a tube on an axis leading directly into the vessel and being coaxial with an axis of the lance, as moved by the carriage, while being alternatively positionable in coaxial relationship with a horizontal delivery axis.

Abstract: A method for estimating the geographical distribution of a cohesive zone in a blast furnace which is intermittently charged with an iron ore material to produce molten iron substantially in a continuous manner is disclosed. The method comprises altering the whole or part of the composition of the charging iron ore material at a certain time point, measuring variations in the composition of produced molten iron ore slag over a given time period, and estimating the shape of the cohesive zone in the furnace on the basis of a pattern of variation of one selected component and the speed of gravitational descent of the charged material through the furnace.

Abstract: A ferrous melt, e.g. of steel, is refined beneath a slag layer by blowing from above with an oxygen-containing gas through a lance and by bubbling an inert gas through the melt from the bottom. According to the invention, the consistency of the slag layer and/or its level is continuously detected on the one hand and the rate of decarburation of the bath is detected on the other hand and in response to these measurements the volume rate of flow of the bubbling gas is controlled on the one hand to maintain a predetermined spacing of the slag layer from the head of the lance and, on the other hand, a fluid consistency of the slag.

Abstract: A gravity fed water bath process treats waste water from spray rinses containing compounds of copper and like heavy metals. For displacing heavy metals, such as copper, the bath has a substantially pure metal with an electrode potential greater than the heavy metal contained in the rinse water. A system for controlling the pH level of the water bath treatment and for supplying acid at the beginning of the bath, and alkaline at the end of the bath provides a highly acidic pH level for the water bath and heavy metal removal chamber, and adjusts the pH level of the discharged water for satisfactory deposit in municipal sewer systems.A method for displacing the heavy metal from the compound in solution requires exposing the heavy metal compound to a substantially pure metal having an electrode potential greater than the heavy metal of the compound, in an acidic bath whose pH level is controlled.
