  • Patent number: 6923843
Abstract: A method of processing molten metal by the injection of oxygen through a water cooled supersonic oxygen injection lance. In the first step of the process, oxygen is injected through the injection lance at an initial flowrate to the process which is the optimal flowrate for the lance tip design. Thereafter, at least one process variable relating to the required oxygen flowrate is continuously measured, and oxygen flowrate may be reduced. A second gas flowrate is admixed to the injection lance to maintain the optimal overall gas flowrate to the process while reducing the oxygen flowrate.

  • Patent number: 5447550
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for controlling the pneumatic transport of friable particulate solid material through a transport pipe by means of a carrier gas circulating in a loop comprising the transport pipe and a carrier gas recycle conduit. A value of kinetic energy of the carrier gas is determined at a location proximal to a point of introduction of the material into the transport pipe. This value is compared with a kinetic energy set point to produce a first control signal which controls venting of carrier gas from the loop. A value of flow rate of the carrier gas in the loop is determined and compared with a comparison signal based on the first control signal to produce a second control signal. The second control signal is used to control the flow rate of the carrier gas through the carrier gas loop.

  • Patent number: 5229063
Abstract: The present invention provides a new process and a new apparatus for the treatment of steel-mill slag in a vessel which allows a wet granulation of the slag without the risk of explosions. The slag is caused to flow through a taphole at the bottom of the vessel, and the flow rate of the slag is determined by means of a continuous check of the weight of the vessel. One or more jets of granulating water, the flow rate of which is adjusted as a function of the slag flow rate, are directed onto the stream of slag flowing from the vessel. The apparatus comprises a vessel containing molten slag. This vessel is equipped with weighing means, with a taphole, with a device for shutting off the taphole, with means for maneuvering the shut-off device between an operating position and a stored or parked position away from the taphole and with a device for opening or freeing the taphole, engageable through the latter in order to initiate the flow of slag.

  • Patent number: 4891062
Abstract: Described is a method for operating a melt-down gasifier(4) in which iron-ore-containing charge materials or iron sponge obtained from same by direct reduction are smelted due to the addition of carbon carriers and blowing an oxygen-containing gas through oxygen nozzles (6) into a fluidized bed created by same, and are (further) reduced to make liquid pig iron or steel starting material. On failure or reduction of the oxygen supply below a predetermined quantity and on failure of the water cooling system of the oxygen nozzles, the still present oxygen supply is cut-off and an inert gas is fed into the melt-down gasifier through the said oxygen nozzles instead, for protecting said oxygen nozzles. Thus, liquid fluidized bed matter is prevented from penetrating into the oxygen nozzles and to solidify in same. In the case of failure of the water cooling system of the oxygen nozzles, the inert gas serves also at the same time as cooling medium.

  • Patent number: 4358092
Abstract: An exothermic reactor has a refractory lining and a plurality of annular nozzles mounted in said lining. Each nozzle has an inner reactant gas passage and an annular shielding fluid passage surrounding said reactant gas passage. A reactant gas is supplied from a reactant gas manifold through reactant gas feed conduits to respective ones of said reactant gas passages. A shielding fluid is supplied from a shielding fluid manifold through shielding fluid feed conduits to respective ones of said shielding fluid passages. The pressure in said reactant gas manifold is sensed and the flow in each of said shielding fluid feed conduits is controlled in dependence on the conditions in said reactant gas manifold so as to prevent a pressure rise in each of said shielding fluid feed conduits above an upper limit. As long as said pressure is below said upper limit, a predetermined ratio is maintained between the flow rate in each of said shielding fluid feed conduits and the flow rate in said reactant fluid manifold.

  • Patent number: 4136857
Abstract: Flux is injected into the oxygen stream being fed to the tuyeres of a steel-refining converter, such as a Q-BOP converter or the like, and the rate of injection is controlled by varying the size of the outlet orifice of the flux-containing tank. The tank is pressurized to the same pressure as the oxygen stream into which the flux is being injected. The weight of flux in the tank is continuously measured and the actual weight is compared with a preset reference weight for each point in time. The difference between the two weights is used to drive a motor in either the forward or reverse direction to open or close the variable-orifice flux tank outlet valve an amount sufficient to adjust the actual injection rate to match the reference weight for a given time. The current weight of flux remaining in the tank is compared with an initial weight; when the difference between the two exceeds a preset total, a signal is generated which causes the motor to close the variable orifice valve.
