Patent number: 6932201Abstract: To prevent a shock absorbing material mounted on a vehicle body from collapsing or being scattered under the shock at the time of a collision. The four sides of a shock absorbing material formed of a foamed material are surrounded by a bellows form cover consisting of four corrugated plates inclusive of corrugated plates. Under an external force due to collision, the bellows is folded and contracted easily, but is difficult to be deformed in the width directions. Therefore, the shock absorbing material receives the energy upon collision in its initial shape, so that the energy is absorbed substantially by the compression of the shock absorbing material. Accordingly, it suffices to design a set load for the shock absorbing material by taking into account only the shock absorbing material, so that it is easy to design the shape, material and the like of the shock absorbing material.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2003Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Assignee: Honda Giken Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Hideki Akiyama, Norihiro Kurata

Patent number: 5813477Abstract: A vibration-reduced impact tool is disclosed wherein an elastomeric vibration isolator is fixedly attached within the tool housing and functions to absorb the vibration typically transmitted from the handle to the operator. The isolator is mounted between the cylinder assembly and the handle. As the tool is operated, a piston within the cylinder assembly is driven forward where it impacts with a tool accessory. The impact causes the piston and cylinder assembly to slide rearward in the tool housing, toward the handle. The elastomeric isolator absorbs the rearward movement of the cylinder assembly and thereby eliminates much of the vibration normally transmitted from the cylinder assembly to the handle and in turn, to the operator.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1996Date of Patent: September 29, 1998Assignees: Chicago Pneumatic Tool Company, The Lord CorporationInventors: John D. Patent number: 5791637Abstract: A tubular compression spring body made of a thermoplastic elastomeric material has stepped internal and external wall surfaces that are designed so that when the body is compressed, it absorbs a large amount of the compression energy and has a low rebound force. Also, when compressed again after rebound, the compression spring body exhibits excellent repeatability in its force-displacement performance. In different embodiments, the compression spring body may be designed to exhibit various force-displacement performance curves in order to meet various criteria desired by the user, such as maximum energy absorption and/or minimum rebound force.Type: GrantFiled: January 11, 1996Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: Iso Dynamics, Inc.Inventors: James Kermit Reichelt, Richard Keith Reichelt

Patent number: 5782461Abstract: An elastomeric bumper restricts movement of large objects such as diesel engines to .+-.0.5" along the bumper's axis. The bumper includes a solid elastomeric button, an elastomeric sleeve spaced therefrom by a gap, and a rigid, tight fitting cup which surrounds the sleeve and limits the outward bulging of the elastomer. The button has an axial length which exceeds the length of the sleeve by an amount which defines a first volume of elastomer. That volume is designed to be equal to the volume of the gap. When the movement of the large object has caused the equivalent of the first volume of elastomer to flow into the gap, additional movement of the object is resisted by bulk loading of the elastomer which behaves as an incompressible fluid and resists additional motion with the full weight of the support to which the bumper is attached.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1996Date of Patent: July 21, 1998Assignee: Lord CorporationInventor: James T. Patent number: 5746419Abstract: An energy absorbing device includes an energy absorber element having a plurality of elongated hollow hexagonal cells. The cells are arranged in a block shape with first and second layers interconnected by an intermediate plate. The intermediate plate closes adjacent ends of the first and second layers and forms three-sided pyramidal structures which project into each individual cell of the first and second layers. Each pyramidal structure has an apex located near the center of each cell. The energy absorber element is deformable under impact loading conditions to absorb and dissipate energy. Upon the removal of the impact load the energy absorber element returns to its original shape.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1996Date of Patent: May 5, 1998Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James Robert McFadden, Joseph Paul Greene, Michael James Bland
