Patent number: 8525460Abstract: An SEA architecture for controlling the torque applied by an SEA that has particular application for controlling the position of a robot link. The SEA architecture includes a motor coupled to one end of an elastic spring and a load coupled to an opposite end of the elastic spring, where the motor drives the load through the spring. The orientation of the shaft of the motor and the load are measured by position sensors. Position signals from the position sensors are sent to an embedded processor that determines the orientation of the load relative to the motor shaft to determine the torque on the spring. The embedded processor receives reference torque signals from a remote controller, and the embedded processor operates a high-speed servo loop about the desired joint torque. The remote controller determines the desired joint torque based on higher order objectives by their impedance or positioning objectives.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2010Date of Patent: September 3, 2013Assignees: GM Global Technology Operations LLC, The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventors: Matthew J. Patent number: 7096577Abstract: A firing mechanism of an explosively actuated tool for driving a fastener into a substrate includes a cocking rod and sear for entraining the firing pin with the firing pin being releasable on cocking by rotation of the sear. The cocking rod and sear form a structure subject to an axial and rotational bias by a coil spring anchored at one end to the structure and at the opposite end to a mounting which during assembly of the mechanism is rotated to apply torsional loading to the spring and is then locked into a housing of the mechanism in an angular orientation in which torsional loading is maintained in the spring.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2003Date of Patent: August 29, 2006Assignee: Cetram PTY LimitedInventor: David John McCullough

Patent number: 5609331Abstract: A suspension adjuster apparatus (48) suitable for use in a motor vehicle having a torsion spring (30) interposed and connecting a chassis (10) to a chassis member (14) is described. The suspension adjuster (48) includes an adjuster seat (66) and an elastomeric pad (68) disposed between the adjuster seat (66) and the chassis member (14). The adjuster apparatus (48) preloads the torsion spring (30) to provide a predetermined ride height while reducing the vibrations transmitted from the suspension to the chassis and passenger compartment of the motor vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: September 5, 1995Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: Ford Motor CompanyInventors: Scott T. Patent number: 5380028Abstract: A torsion bar suspension system for a trailer that includes a suspension frame having a spindle at one end for rotatably carrying a wheel. The suspension frame is mounted to the trailer frame to pivot about an axis spaced from the wheel axis of rotation. A torsion bar is mounted to the trailer frame between the wheel end of the suspension frame and the suspension frame pivot axis. The torsion bar is operatively coupled to the suspension frame such that torque at the torsion bar resists pivoting of the suspension frame about its pivot axis. The torsion bar/suspension frame coupling comprises an arm of variable length to accommodate changing radius between the torsion bar and the suspension frame as the frame rotates about its pivot axis. The torsion bar and suspension frame are mountable and demountable to and from the trailer frame as an assembly. The suspension frame includes facility for adjusting height, camber and toe-in of the wheel.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1993Date of Patent: January 10, 1995Assignees: John R. Ferris, Thomas P. Patent number: 5332255Abstract: A heavy duty front suspension system especially for passenger buses includes square rubber torque springs supported by a spring frame assembly. The spring support frame includes a lower support having transverse reinforcement gusset plates extending at an angle from the frame assembly to enable the frame and torque spring support the loads transmitted by the bus and to withstand the variations in the road surface. The torque spring includes a hexagonal block on each end of the tubular shaft for removably mounting an adjustment lever to transmit the tension stresses to the spring. Each adjustment level has an eyelet connected to adjustable tension bars extending to a mounting bases which are anchored to the structural cross members of the bus body. Patent number: 4921231Abstract: The torsion spring cartridge assembly disclosed herein is adaptable for use in practically any environment where oscillating motion is encountered. The assembly provides axle support for a rotating member as well as spring suspension for the axle. Dampeners can be provided to damp motion in one direction of oscillation or rotation. Serviceability is simplified since the entire assembly is removable for repair or replacement. The spring rate can be quickly and easily adjusted to accommodate environmental changes such as load, road conditions and weather. The torsion bars are protected from overstressing and possible distortion by a torsion limiter.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1986Date of Patent: May 1, 1990Assignee: Reynolds Torsion System, Inc.Inventors: Norman Reynolds, Wilbur C. Patent number: 4863148Abstract: A system for enabling modification and adjustment of an automobile torsion bar suspension assembly housed in a tubular beam housing includes a plurality of torsion spring stiffener members, each comprising a tubular member dimensioned to be slidably received about the torsion leaf spring assembly within the beam housing. The tubular member includes opposed end portions provided with an inner peripheral surface formed complementary to the outer surface conformation of the leaves of the torsion bar assembly and adapted to engage the leaves assembly in nonrotating fashion.
