  • Patent number: 8967301
Abstract: An earth boring bit has a bit body with a depending bearing pin, a cone rotatably mounted on the bearing pin, a seal gland between the cone and the bearing pin, and a seal assembly located in the seal gland. The seal assembly includes an annular metallic spring encircling the bearing pin. The spring has a geometric center line that extends in a circle around the bearing pin. The spring is elastically deformable in radial directions relative to the center line. An elastomeric layer is located on an exterior side of the spring and is biased by the spring against a surface of the seal gland.

  • Patent number: 6406029
Abstract: A seal ring having a frustoconical spring completely encapsulated within an annular body provides a bias force to an annular lip seal of the annular body to assure positive contact with an opposed face of an adjacently disposed member of a joint assembly. The seal ring requires minimal counterbore depth in the member in which the seal ring is mounted, and no modifications are required in the spring or in the base of the counterbore to provide retention of the spring in the joint.

  • Patent number: 5772217
Abstract: A liquid seal unit having a seal ring with an annular end face cooperating with a seal mating ring on an associated component to form a liquid-tight dynamic seal. A composite multi-functional member with a flexible finger spring embedded in a unitary elastomeric body urges the seal ring and the mating ring together. The spring has an annular continuous outer body portion and a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart, radially inwardly extending flexible spring fingers. The unitary elastomeric body includes radially spaced, first and second annular load bearing formations that extend in axially opposite directions. The elastomeric body still further includes an axially extending sealing ring positioning collar lying radially between the load bearing formations and having an inner surface that engages a seating surface in the seal ring to provide a secondary seal.
