Abstract: Disclosed is the shape of a curvature of two or more pathways for a device having moving parts that cause movement of an object along those pathways, such that the device can locate or hold the object. In the embodiment, an apparatus is described that centers and optionally locks an object at a desired location. The applications for such a device are varied and can range from chucking a workpiece of varying diameters in a lathe, to centering a drone on a landing zone, to medical and scientific devices to capture and center objects to study, to moving atomic level objects using an electromagnetic field. The scope of this disclosure is the mathematics that defines the mirrored curvatures of each curved pathway and the positioning of the curvatures relative to each other, and the relative movement of the mirrored curvatures to cause the desired effect.

Abstract: A power chuck includes a housing in which there is arranged a drive unit having a traction guide means moveable in the direction of a clamping axis. There are arranged two pairs of mutually diametrically opposite base jaws. The base jaws are guided radially, in the housing substantially perpendicularly to the clamping axis, and the drive unit is adapted to convert the movement of the traction guide means into the movement of the base jaws. According to the invention, it is proposed that the drive unit for each base jaw has a slider which is in engagement with the base jaw and which is moveable with a movement component on a circular path about the clamping axis.

The harmonic drive is arranged with an input member driven by direct connection with the motor rotor, and an output member directly connected to a long stroke jaw actuation device, providing an integral unit which rotates together with the spindle during machining. During jaw adjustment, an electromagnetic brake releasably connects the motor stator with the spindle and chuck body. Gripping force adjustment is achieved by adjusting the motor torque. The inertial forces of the rotating components are overcome by controlling the motor torque and velocity as gripping ensues, and therefore both high and low gripping forces may be accurately achieved with high speed jaw adjustment. Jaw position and workpiece diameter measurement with a feedback capability are made by use of a rotary encoder.

Wedges, carrying unique slip systems are positioned around the passages between the plates and are slidably mounted for guided radial movement inwardly to initially grip pipe in neutral position and outwardly to ungrip pipe as moved by an hydraulic cylinder pivotally mounted aside on the lower plate. The unique slip systems automatically increase gripping force on initially gripped pipe on more than about 0.7 inches up or down movement from neutral position caused by loads on the pipe. Forces resulting from increased pipe gripping force on pipe develop frictional forces within the slip assembly, which effectively prevent outward movement of the wedges after inadvertent or on purpose operation of the cylinder to ungrip the pipe.

  • Patent number: 4623155
Abstract: A drill chuck for a hammer drill apparatus or the like having a plurality of clamp jaws advanceable to and retractable from a chuck drill axis so as to be able to grasp and hold a drill, wherein each of the clamp jaws is advanced into and retracted from a chuck opening in the chuck in a feed channel directed toward, and preferably perpendicular to, the chuck drill axis and further oriented so that the clamp jaws engage and hold the drill in the chuck opening when advanced in the channels, each of the feed channels being conformed so that each of the clamp jaws fits movably, but sufficiently tightly, therein so that drilling dirt does not penetrate between the clamp jaws and the surfaces of the feed channels, and the drill chuck is provided with a plurality of open cleaning passages connecting the interior wall of the chuck opening adjacent a mouth of one of the feed channels to the outside through the chuck.

  • Patent number: 4602799
Abstract: A chuck has a chuck body centered on a chuck axis and having an axially forwardly opening and axially centered recess and an adjustment ring rotatable but not axially displaceable on the chuck body, having a central hole aligned with the recess, and formed with a plurality of guide passages open radially inwardly into the hole. The body and ring normally are carried on a drill spindle with the shank of a drill bit through the recess and hole and the spindle, shank, and chuck axes all coaxial. Respective jaws radially displaceable in the passages have inner ends engageable with the drill-bit shank in the recess. The chuck body has a face directly axially confronting the jaws and formed with an axially projecting spiral ridge. The jaws have axially projecting teeth complementary to and engaging with the ridge. Thus relative rotation of the body and ring about the axis radially displaces the jaws in the ring.

  • Patent number: 4576254
Abstract: A hydraulically operated slip assembly, connectible to a well head or well pipe handling machine and useful to intermittently grip pipe being run into or pulled from the well. The slip assembly has upper and lower plates with passages for pipe. Wedges, carrying unique slip systems, are positioned around the passages and slidably mounted for radial movement between guide plates extending from the upper and lower plates. The wedges are moved radially inward to grip pipe and radially outward to release pipe by a hydraulic cylinder, pivotally mounted aside the lower plate. When actuated to extend, the hydraulic cylinder rotates an inner bearing race and attached camming segments, which move the wedges inwardly to grip pipe. When the cylinder is actuated to contract, the bearing race and camming segments are rotated to pull the wedges outward radially, releasing pipe. The bearing outer race is housed in ring segments between and connecting the slip assembly upper and lower plates.

  • Patent number: 4548417
Abstract: A chuck for use in lathes and on other work equipment has a jaw carrier that is mounted in a central bore of a chuck housing on a pair of pivot pins and is capable of being indexed or rotated 180.degree. within the chuck housing while a workpiece is held in chuck jaws supported on the jaw housing. The indexing permits performing operations on the opposite ends of the workpiece without unchucking the workpiece from the jaws that are carried on the jaw carrier. The construction of the chuck permits obtaining adequate jaw gripping force and a positive drive between the chuck housing of the workpiece and the indexing jaw carrier. The chuck greatly increases the versatility of machine tools and yet is easily constructed with existing tools itself because it doesn't involve complex interfitting parts.

  • Patent number: 4398733
Abstract: In the embodiment shown, the chuck comprises a hub rotatably journalled in a jaw carrier, and the latter rotatably journalled in a body. The carrier pivotably mounts a plurality of jaws having camming surfaces, and drive pins upstanding from the hub and the body slidably engage the camming surfaces to move the jaws outwardly, to engage the inner surface of a workpiece, or inwardly, to engage the outer surface of the workpiece. A screw carried in the jaw carrier is movable into the hub, to lock the hub and jaw carrier together, and movable into the body, to lock the body and the jaw carrier together. In the prior circumstance, the drive pins of the body are operative to move the jaws inwardly or outwardly; in the latter circumstance, the pins of the hub are operative to move the jaws as noted above. The jaws have a first plurality of camming surfaces for operative engagement with the drive pins in the body, and a second plurality of camming surfaces for operative engagement with the drive pins in the hub.
