Means To Prevent Jaw Loosening Patents (Class 279/140)
  • Patent number: 6302408
Abstract: The invention relates to a tool system that can be coupled to the drive shaft of a lathe. Said system comprises a tool holding fixture which can be connected to the lathe, and a took which is stored in a polygonal recess in the tool holding fixture so as to be torsion-proof yet removable. This tool has a tool shank and at least one functional section extending coaxially therefrom. The tool rests axially on a centering area in the polygonal recess, and rests radially on several identical locking elements. These are arranged in radial cavities in the tool holding fixture, at equal angular distances and at an axial distance from the centering area. This enables centering of the tool in the tool holding fixture.

Abstract: A chuck structure with locking and positioning functions includes a cylindrical body having head and tail ends, the middle thereof being provided with a plurality of inclined channels; a plurality of clamp pawls received in the channels; a limiting ring provided at the middle of the cylindrical body and having a plurality of equidistantly spaced apart through slots annularly provided at the center thereof for passage of the clamp pawls; a drive seat rotatably mounted at the head end of the body for enclosing and engaging the clamp pawls; and an outer shell for enclosing the drive seat. The outer shell includes upper and lower shell bodies. In use, the user turns the upper shell body to cause the clamp pawls to retract inwardly to clamp a tool, with the outer shell and the limiting ring providing a positioning effect so that the clamp pawls will not slip due to vibration or excessive torque, and the tightening force can be maintained.

Abstract: A quick-change chuck for a tool bit mounted to a drive shaft. The chuck includes a spindle with a tool end and a hub end where a bore extends into the hub end from a forward face. The bore has an inner end for receiving a tool bit. A sleeve is disposed around and rotatably connected to the hub end. The sleeve has a spindle side wall and an outer side wall. An air gap exists between the sleeve and the thrust washer on the spindle. Adjustable jaws protrude through the spindle into the bore at an acute angle and define an opening between the jaws. The jaws threadably engage the sleeve so that rotating the sleeve about the hub causes the adjustable jaws to move axially between an open position and a closed position. The open position occurs when the jaws are retracted from the bore and the closed position occurs when the jaws are extended into the bore. An bias member urges the jaws towards a closed position, and maintains the air gap between the thrust washer and the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5464230
Abstract: A drill chuck has a first body rotatable about an axis and formed with a plurality of angularly spaced angled guides, respective jaws slidable in the guides, and a second body axially fixed but rotatable on the first body. Interengaging screwthread formations on the second body and engaged with the jaws radially displace the jaws on the first body toward each other on forward rotation of one of the bodies relative to the other body in a tightening direction and radially displace of the jaws away from each other on opposite backward rotation of the one body relative to the other body in a loosening direction. A locking ring axially displaceable on the other body is formed with at least one tooth and the one body is formed with another tooth axially meshable with the locking-ring tooth in a front locking position of the locking ring to inhibit rotation of the bodies relative to each other. A holding ring axially fixed on the other body is rotatable thereon between angularly offset locked and unlocked positions.

  • Patent number: 5443275
Abstract: On a chuck, the clamping jaws can be adjusted axially by means of an internally threaded sleeve of a jackscrew actuator in one direction for clamping and in the other direction for release. When the jaws are adjusted in the clamping direction, the clamping jaws are moved radially inward by interaction with a jaw convergence sleeve; for an axial movement in the release direction, the clamping jaws are moved radially outward by interaction with jaw expansion means attached inside the jaw convergence sleeve. The internally threaded sleeve is designed on its one end as an expansion cage for the clamping jaws lying inside the convergence sleeve, and is centered by an adjacent sleeve extension in the base unit. The internally threaded sleeve is guided both inside the expansion cage and inside the sleeve extension centering on the guide sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5435578
Abstract: A self-tightening chuck has a chuck body centered on an axis and adapted to be rotated thereabout, a plurality of jaws radially displaceable on the body, and an adjustment sleeve rotatable on the body, formed with radially inwardly directed teeth, and engaged with the jaws such that rotation of the adjustment sleeve on the body in a forward direction displaces the jaws radially inward on the body and opposite rotation in a reverse direction displaces the jaws radially outward. A tightening ring rotatable on the body has stop formations for limiting its rotation on the body to a predetermined angular travel and a tightening spring braced angularly between the tightening ring and the body urges the tightening ring angularly in the forward direction. A locking body radially displaceable on the tightening ring is formed with teeth meshable with the tightening-ring teeth. A locking spring braced radially against the locking body urges the locking-body teeth into mesh with the adjustment-sleeve teeth.

  • Patent number: 5411275
Abstract: A chuck for releasably holding a tool such as a drill bit has a torque limiting coupling in the mechanism which is rotated manually to close the jaws of the chuck on the tool. When the chuck has been tightened on the tool by a certain amount, the torque limiting coupling releases. Thereafter, continued manual rotation of the component which provides the input to the coupling operates a cam and cam follower mechanism which forces the jaws of the chuck into even tighter engagement with the tool. When the chuck is subsequently loosened to release the tool, the cam and cam follower mechanism automatically resets to ready the chuck for reuse.

  • Patent number: 5215317
Abstract: A chuck has a spring connection between the nut which rotates to advance or retract the jaws and the control ring or sleeve which the user rotates to operate the chuck. The spring normally transmits tightening or loosening rotation from the sleeve to the nut. When the jaws contact a tool, however, the spring allows the sleeve to continue to rotate even though the nut is stopped by the jaw-tool contact. Continued rotation of the sleeve relative to the nut causes a cam mechanism interposed between these two elements to force the non-rotating nut axially forward. This applies a final tool-gripping force to the jaws.
