  • Patent number: 11364545
Abstract: A power tool includes a housing (10), a spindle (4) supported in the housing to be pivotable or rotatable about a driving axis, a clamping shaft (60) that is selectively movable in the up-down direction relative to the spindle, a biasing member (70), a release member (71) and an actuating member (50). The release member is selectively movable in the up-down direction relative to the spindle and is configured to selectively interrupt transmission of upward biasing force from the biasing member to the clamping shaft. The release member is also configured to be locked to the spindle in a locked position while transmission of the biasing force is being interrupted. The actuating member is movable upward in the up-down direction relative to the spindle in response to being pressed upward by a clamping part (64) or by a tool accessory (91) to thereby unlock the release member from the spindle.

The bi-stable coupling can be used to penetrate (e.g., drill or push) through a material layer of unknown thickness without plunging the tool into the adjacent layer. In accordance with the invention, in a first state, force is applied to the tool to initiate penetration and a reactive force maintains the device in the first state during penetration and when tool penetrates the material, the reactive force is diminished enabling the device to transition to a second state in which the tool becomes retracted. In medical applications, the invention allows for drilling through bone of unknown thickness without plunging into the adjacent soft tissue.

  • Patent number: 8434976
Abstract: A holesaw mandrel assembly has a mandrel with a first shanking end, a body, and a second extending end that includes a threaded spud to receive a holesaw. A first member is secured on the second end. The first member is axially slidable on the second end. The first member also includes a friction surface to contact the holesaw. The friction surface moves between a first engaging position and a second disengaging position. A mechanism on the mandrel moves the friction surface between its engaged and disengaged positions. The mechanism includes a biased collar and a bearing race. A mating connection enables rotation of the collar which, in turn, enables the friction surface to move between its engaged and disengaged positions.
