Conical Sleeve Patents (Class 279/62)
  • Publication number: 20110285097
Abstract: A chuck including a body having a tail section and a nose section defining an axial bore. A plurality of jaws are movably disposed with respect to the axial bore and a nut is in threaded engagement with the jaws. A sleeve engages the nut so that rotation of the sleeve moves the jaws. A first ring defines a plurality of teeth and a second ring is rotatable relative to the nut over a limited arc and defines at least one pawl. In a first state, the second ring is non-rotatable relative to the first ring in both the opening and closing directions, and in a second state the first and second rings are rotatable about the body, and the second ring is rotatable relative to the first ring in the closing direction.

Abstract: A drill chuck has a chuck body centered on and rotatable about an axis and formed with angled guides and respective jaws slidable in the guides axially forward and radially toward each other and axially rearward and radially away from each other. An annular tightening element is limitedly axially shiftable on the sleeve between a front position and a rear position. Screwthreads engaged between the element and the jaws axially displace the jaws forward on rotation of the element in a tightening direction and axially displace the jaws rearward on rotation of the element in an opposite loosening direction. Respective annular arrays of teeth angularly fixed on the element and the body are interengaged and prevent relative rotation of the element and body in the rear position of the element and are spaced and permit relative rotation of the element and body in the front position of the element.

A locking member, in a first axial position, is rotatable with respect to the driver housing. In a second axial position, it operatively engages the housing and the nut so that the locking member is rotationally held to the housing and the nut so that the nut is rotationally held to the housing. The locking member is axially reciprocal between the first axial position and the second axial position.
