Patent number: 9604116Abstract: A bicycle simulator (1) is basically constituted by a bicycle pre-arranged for static or pseudo-static use. The bicycle comprises front and rear supports (13, 14) for resting on the floor (12) that simulate the contact of the wheels of a normal bicycle on the road. The two supports are preferably constituted by a front supporting wheel (13) and by a rear supporting wheel (14) that rest on the floor and support in a freely rotatable way the respective wheel axles (3, 11). Rotatably mounted within at least the front supporting wheel is a flywheel (F1, F2). The front flywheel (F1) is set in rotation by a respective electric motor (M) or by a transmission driven by the pedals, for creating a stabilizing gyroscopic effect, which enables the user to maintain his balance when pedaling with the bicycle stationary, resting on the floor via the supporting wheels in a static condition.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2012Date of Patent: March 28, 2017Inventor: Fabio Pedrini

Patent number: 8251390Abstract: This invention provides a stabilizing system and method for two-wheeled vehicles that affords the rider no restriction on the full range of movements (banks, leans, etc.) common to bicycles, but that provides greater stability during turns and other maneuvers so that an unintentional bank or tilt (potentially causing a fall) is less likely, even at relatively slow speeds and startup. A rotating mass of predetermined mass-value and radial mass-distribution is provided coaxially with the front axle. The mass is supported on bearings so as to freewheel with respect to the rotation of the front wheel. As such it can be induced to spin significantly faster than the front wheel thereby generating a gyroscopic effect at the front wheel about the axle. This gyroscopic effect influences the steering of the wheel by the rider. Due to precession, the wheel tends to follow any excessive bank by the vehicle, ensuring that the rider can “steer-out-of” an unintended tilt or bank.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2009Date of Patent: August 28, 2012Assignee: The Gyrobike, Inc.Inventors: Daniella Reichstetter, Sascha M. Publication number: 20100096911Abstract: A wheel hub for capturing energy created by road bumps and converting that into energy to be used in moving a vehicle in it's current direction of motion. Energy return is accomplished by elastic spring means, although the physical principle of operation is not directly obvious. Any road shock imparted upon the wheel will result in a radial displacement of an outer wheel hub and thus a radial force toward the center of the wheel. The radial force will be released as an axial rotation imparted upon a wheel hub assembly, thus increasing the axial speed in the current direction of motion. The principle is similar to that causing the earth to rotate around the sun. The wheel hub assembly will not wobble erratically since there is a dampening component by virtue of a vehicles weight and moment of inertia of a rotating wheel. Additionally, total shock absorbtion, is increased.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 17, 2008Publication date: April 22, 2010Inventor: Sherif Fahmy Eldeeb

Patent number: 6983948Abstract: A flywheel power unit that can be inserted into a variety of machines. The standardization of the power unit means that the more expensive gearing, clutch and flywheel components do not have to be duplicated in each human powered machine. Standard bicycle gearing components can be assembled with a modified clutch for a typical motorcycle to create an inexpensive human powered flywheel power unit. As the user pedals, power is stored in the flywheel. The flywheel axle is connected to a transmission transfer gear that turns a transmission input gear for a transmission with multiple gears in a gearing ratio of 10:1 to 0.8:1 (which is typical for a motorcycle transmission.). A transmission input gear and the transmission transfer gear are approximately a 1:1 gearing ratio. A transmission output gear is attached to the transmission that provides power output from the flywheel only when a clutch within the transmission in engaged.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2001Date of Patent: January 10, 2006Inventor: Cory Denison

Patent number: 4740001Abstract: A sprag wheel is a one-wheeled recreational vehicle. Two treads extending on opposite sides of a ground wheel provide a place for the rider to stand. A flywheel concentrically mounted with the treads and ground wheel and housed within the ground wheel provides pitch stability for the rider. That is, the flywheel is coupled to the treads and ground wheel so that the flywheel rotates faster than the ground wheel. The treads are coupled to the flywheel so that the treads will move only by changing the rpm of the flywheel. Thus, a relatively large force is required to move the treads, and, in any event, a force greater than that necessary for the rider to balance on the treads. The sprag wheel of this invention is designed to imitate Thor's wheel in the "B.C." comic strip, so the ground wheel has a relatively large diameter and a moderate width so that a rider may balance on the wheel.Type: GrantFiled: September 1, 1983Date of Patent: April 26, 1988Inventor: Keith R. Patent number: 4609165Abstract: Autorotation in helicopters at low altitudes can be achieved even when the inherent design of the helicopter would prohibit successful entry into the autorotation mode. Angular kinetic energy from the main propulsion engine is stored in a flywheel which automatically transfers this energy to the main drive shaft in the event of engine failure. During normal operation, the flywheel is driven through the main drive shaft by coupling to a secondary drive shaft. The main drive shaft in turn is driven by the engine through an overrunning clutch assembly. The flywheel is maintained within an evacuated housing whereby air drag is substantially eliminated. In the event of engine failure, the overrunning clutch disengages the engine from the main drive shaft and flywheel will continue to apply energy to the main drive shaft through the secondary drive shaft to permit autorotation and a no-damage landing even at low altitude flight levels.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1983Date of Patent: September 2, 1986Assignee: Hughes Helicopters, Inc.Inventors: Andrew H. Patent number: 4445701Abstract: There is provided a vehicle which includes a frame, a steerable wheel mounted on the frame and at least one further wheel mounted for free rotation on the frame. A flywheel is mounted for rotation adjacent one of the wheels. The vehicle includes means for imparting rotation to the flywheel, and a clutch plate rotatably and coaxially mounted adjacent the same wheel to which the flywheel is adjacent. Speed-reduction means allows rotation of the flywheel to rotate the clutch plate at a faster rate than the flywheel, and a frictionless clutch is provided between the clutch plate and the adjacent wheel.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 1981Date of Patent: May 1, 1984Assignee: Stroudex Industries Inc.Inventor: Edward A. Patent number: 4353569Abstract: A freewheel flywheel transmission system for a bicycle capable of storing kinetic rotational energy, in which the flywheel properties are utilized with a minimum of moving parts and in which the energy of the user or the kinetic energy of the bicycle is stored or released in a very simple manner. The transmission system includes a fixed axle and a hub shell rotatively supported by the axle. A flywheel and a first ratchet sprocket to which the energy of the user is applied are affixed to the hub shell. Second and third sprockets are rotatively supported on bearings by said hub shell. First and second clutches are used for engaging and disengaging second and third sprockets to their respective flywheel clutch faces enabling the user to transfer the energy so as to operate the vehicle in a plurality of modes as the power needs vary. Energy from second and third sprockets is transmitted through second and third transmission chains to fourth and fifth sprocket wheels attached to the rear drive wheel.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1978Date of Patent: October 12, 1982Inventor: Antonio F. Patent number: 4037854Abstract: A bicycle includes a flywheel mounted coaxially and rotatably with respect to a pedal-carrying shaft. The flywheel is drivingly coupled to the rear tractive wheel via a pair of friction wheels mounted in gear train fashion to provide a ratio of at least 1,000 revolutions of the flywheel per revolution of the tractive wheel. One of the intermediate wheels serves as a slip clutch for selective engagement with the tractive wheel. This clutch wheel has its axle mounted in an elongated slot. A bendable arcuate control lever positions the axle along the slot.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1975Date of Patent: July 26, 1977Inventor: Eugene Large

Patent number: 3955429Abstract: An inertia motor for use in toys, comprising a drive gear mounted on one of the axles of the vehicle and having a substantial diameter and rotating a pinion gear which is coaxially mounted with a substantially larger back gear, which in turn drives a pinion which is coaxial with a flywheel, the flywheel being mounted eccentrically with respect to the drive shaft. The flywheel is of such size and weight, and the gear ratios are such that the flywheel is rotated at least about twenty times with each rotation of the drive gear and, therefore, stores a substantial amount of energy which is slowly released from the flywheel to the drive gear to provide a slow, prolonged release of energy to drive the vehicle. In one embodiment of the invention, a pair of gear trains are provided, one on each side of the flywheel, in mirror image to each other, and the housing therefor, which may contain only two wheels, is in a substantially eliptical shape having a flattened bottom.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1974Date of Patent: May 11, 1976Inventor: John E.
