A biased locking mechanism is releasably retained in an unlocked configuration and locks the first and second clamp elements in the closed configuration. In a modified embodiment, the first and second clamp elements are connected together to also pivot relative to each other about a common third pivot axis.

    Abstract: The present application describes apparatus for attaching or securing a fifth wheel hitch to a bed of a towing vehicle. The fifth wheel hitch may be arranged to be secured to a hitch ball, such as a gooseneck hitch ball. The fifth wheel hitch may include a chamber for accepting a hitch ball, a locking pin for securing the hitch ball in the chamber, and a handle for selectively securing and releasing the hitch ball.     Abstract: A fifth wheel coupling for coupling sections of a tractor-trailer articulated vehicle includes a main plate mounted on the tractor which defines a keyhole slot for receiving a kingpin mounted on the trailer. The keyhole slot terminates in a coupling aperture, and a locking mechanism movable between open and closed positions locks the kingpin in the aperture in the closed position to thereby couple the tractor and trailer together. A safety latch mounted in the keyhole slot is movable from an inactive position permitting the kingpin to move through the slot and into the aperture to an active position blocking the keyhole slot. An operating mechanism operates the locking mechanism and also moves the safety latch from the active to the inactive position to permit movement of the kingpin out of the keyhole slot when the tractor and trailer are uncoupled.

The bumper is pivotally attached to tie bar that has its rear most end pivotally attached to the underside of the hitch plate. The mechanism also includes a wedge member and a secondary lock member pivotally attached thereto, where the lock member has a guide extension inserted through a guide hole in the tie bar. Rotation of the tie bar inward causes the wedge member and secondary lock to move inward until the wedge member is seated to the rear of the closed jaw assembly and the secondary lock rotates to engage a detent.

A controller is provided for automatically extending or retracting the pins based upon speed measurements made by a speed sensor such as the tractor's speedometer or separate GPS sensor. The controller connects to the speed sensor and pressure vessels and causes the pins to project into the race plate slots in the event that the vehicle exceeds a predetermined speed threshold and causes the pins to retract from the race plate slots in the event the vehicle has reduced its speed below a predetermined threshold.
