Patent number: 6272949Abstract: An accessory apparatus for uncoupling a king pin of a trailer from a locking device on a fifth wheel. The accessory apparatus includes a power device such as a pneumatic cylinder suspended from the bottom surface of the fifth wheel plate to form a fifth wheel assembly. A cam is mounted on the end of the power device's actuating member. The cam and actuating member are symmetric. A coil spring is held within the power device's housing, and is also symmetric with the longitudinal axes of the cam and actuating member. No external guides or springs are needed. The power device may be energized from a remote location to propel the cam to contact and propel a follower on an operating rod to unlock the fifth wheel jaw to release the king pin.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1998Date of Patent: August 14, 2001Assignee: AMSTED Industries IncorporatedInventors: David J. Patent number: 5257796Abstract: A fifth wheel hitch has a single swinging jaw, i.e., pivotal lock element, a unique cam arm, a locking plunger, a release arm, and release handle that all specially function in an interrelated manner to clearly indicate the locked or unlocked condition of the lock element. The release handle has special notches for cooperative interengagement with the top plate, specifically a lock notch and an unlock notch, engageable with a flange of the fifth wheel plate to cause the release handle to be located in specific positions. A cam surface on a finger of the pivotal lock element operates the novel cam arm to shift the release arm, for shifting it out of the unlock notch when the fifth wheel uncouples from the kingpin. The cam arm is held over center when the jaw is open, preventing the jaws from closing until the kingpin enters. When the release handle is pulled to release the locking plunger, the lock notch engages the top plate to retain the pull handle until released from this notch.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1992Date of Patent: November 2, 1993Assignee: Holland Hitch CompanyInventors: Gregory R. Patent number: 4455036Abstract: A king pin for a tractor trailer coupling is disclosed. The king pin is substantially conventional except that the lower flange thereof, which is presently standardized to have less diameter than the upper part of the king pin, is made predeterminedly larger than the upper part so that it cannot be received in the usual recess at the upper end of the coupler jaw when closed, or when the jaw is opened the flange positively prevents the jaw from closing. Thus a trailer can never be towed at all by partial seating of the flange of a misaligned king pin in the upper recess of a closed jaw as now can occur with a standardized king pins resulting in unexpected and dangerous separation of the tractor and trailer on the open highway.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1982Date of Patent: June 19, 1984Inventor: William A. Patent number: 4413943Abstract: To unload a lengthy object from a transport trailer, the rear of the trailer is supported by legs and the bogie wheels at the rear are shifted fowardly. As they reach the front of the trailer, they are automatically coupled to the tractor and the tractor is disconnected from the trailer. The bogie wheels continue their forward motion and push the tractor from beneath the trailer. The rear of the trailer is then lowered to the ground and the lengthy object is released from the trailer and slides into engagement with the ground. Thereafter, the trailer is driven forward by the tractor, while coupled to the bogie wheels, until the object is unloaded. The rear of the trailer is then raised by the legs and the bogie wheels are shifted rearwardly to their initial position, whereby the tractor is pulled into coupling engagement with the trailer and the bogie wheels are released from the tractor.Type: GrantFiled: July 9, 1981Date of Patent: November 8, 1983Inventor: Leo L.
