Antisway Hitch Patents (Class 280/455.1)
  • Patent number: 7506885
Abstract: A load-leveling, weight-distributing hitch system includes a hitch head, configured for attachment to a rear of a towing vehicle, a T socket, horizontally pivotally attached to the hitch head, a spring bar, having a forward end removably attached to the T socket, a tension member, connected to a rearward end of the spring bar, and a spring bar lift, configured for attachment to the tongue of a trailer. The spring bar lift is configured to apply tension to the tension member, so as to lift the rearward end of the spring bar, and thereby transmit a moment to the hitch head tending to lift the rear of the towing vehicle.

Abstract: A trailer hitch which will resist fishtailing and increase stability of the towing vehicle-trailer combination is mounted at the rear of the towing vehicle. The hitch includes a pivot connector, such as a ball, which receives the mating end of a tongue extending from the trailer to be towed. However, the rotation of the trailer about the pivot connector is resisted, but not prevented, and the trailer tongue is biased to a preset position with respect to the pivot connector. The trailer hitch can provide limited lateral movement of the pivot connector to move the pivot point forwardly of the rear of the towing vehicle. The resistance to pivoting of the trailer with respect to the pivot connector results first in lateral movement of the pivot connector before resisted pivoting about the pivot connector. Lateral movement of the connector can be promoted during certain conditions and resisted during other conditions.

  • Patent number: 7175194
Abstract: An anti-jackknifing device adapted for engagement between a tractor having a fifth wheel engaged with a trailer. The device features a pair of catch arms rotationally engaged to a mount with the tractor. The distal ends of the catch arms move between an engaged position in a horizontal path between two trailer mounted engaging components adapted to engage the distal end and a disengaged position out of the path. The distal ends of the catch arms may be pivotally mounted. The distal ends of the catch arms and the engaging components may also be shaped to cooperatively engage on contact. A control causes the catch arms to rotate thereby engaging the distal ends of the arms between the engaging components either automatically above a threshold speed or manually. This engagement limits the angle of the trailer to the tractor to a predetermined angle when trailer rotates on the fifth wheel causing the engaging components to contact the distal ends of the catch arms.

The apertures are movable about the multi-stage locking pins. A speed detecting mechanism cooperates with the displacing mechanism for automatically adjusting the tolerance angle. The speed detecting mechanism emits intermittent notification signals to the displacing mechanism during transit. The tolerance angle has an inverse relationship to the tractor speed. • Patent number: 6485046
Abstract: A trailer hitch assembly for connecting a towing vehicle to a towed trailer having symmetrical anti-sway features. The assembly includes a hitch ball rigidly affixed to a hitch beam extending transversely from the rear of the towing vehicle. A pair of spring-biased telescopic compressible and extendable control rods are connected to each end of the hitch beam and at their other ends to a control beam. A hitch bar is connected to the hitch ball on the towing vehicle and pivotally connected to the forward end of a trailer coupler that intersects and is pivotally connected to the central portion of the control beam by a pivot member. The pivot member is integral with the control beam and includes a control arm having a roller engaged with a downwardly opening slotted rearward end of the hitch bar. The trailer coupler includes a trailer hitch ball to which a trailer coupler socket is connected, with the trailer coupler socket being rigidly affixed to the tongue or frame of the towed vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6386571
Abstract: A side strut (5) for a lower steering arm of a tractor has a single-action hydraulic cylinder and a setting unit with a hollow cylinder (17) and an adjustable setting element 20. The setting element (20) includes a threaded bore (30) which receives a threaded rod (32). The hydraulic cylinder has a first attaching element (6) to connect to a tractor. The threaded rod (32) has a second attaching element (7) to connect a lower steering arm. In the fully moved-out position of the hydraulic cylinder, the setting element (20) is rotatable by an actuating lever (33). Thus, the threaded rod (32) moves in and out. To prevent any rotation, a first holding element (36) is provided. The actuating lever (33) engages the holding element in a rest position.

  • Publication number: 20020036390
Abstract: A double-acting, weight distributing trailer hitch includes a drawbar assembly and a hitchhead assembly. The drawbar assembly is releasably connected to a tow vehicle and includes a first coupling component at its rearward end. The hitchhead assembly includes a second coupling component and a rearwardly extending drawbar extension, which are pivotably connected along substantially vertical axis by a yoke. The drawbar extension is pivotally connected to the yoke by a cam. The drawbar extension is also mounted pivotably to the hitch ball along a first horizontal axis that is transverse to the direction of travel. A rearward portion of the drawbar extension is pivotably interconnected to the trailer along a second horizontal axis, which is parallel to the first horizontal axis and located behind the hitch ball. This creates an overlap between the forward end of the trailer and the drawbar extension.

  • Patent number: 6305705
Abstract: An improved trailer hitch is provided which provides greater control over the towing vehicle and towed vehicle by eliminating swaying of a towed vehicle and permitting the towing vehicle-towed vehicle combination to make sharper turns. The hitch comprises a beam mounted to the parallel side frame members of a towing vehicle. Pivotally attached to the beam are a pair of crossover arms which are also pivotally attached at their opposite ends to a trailer receiver. The receiver includes a traditional trailer attachment for connection to a towed vehicle. The receiver further includes an oscillator mounted on the receiver. This oscillator is operable for moving laterally along a long metal tube which is attached at each end to the frame members of the towing vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6283488
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for stabilizing the two lower steering arms (1) of a tractor. The lower steering arms (1) can be actuated by a hydraulic power lift (9). Each lower steering arm (1) is associated with a side strut (6) which includes a single-acting hydraulic cylinder (7) to stabilize and secure the lower steering arm (1). A pre-selection valve (12) and a control valve (13) enable the hydraulic cylinders to be connected to the power lift (9) either via a line or loaded separately by a second pressure source (P2). Thus, independently of the actuation of the power lift (9), the two lower steering arms can be centrally centered by the hydraulic cylinders (7).

  • Patent number: 6283489
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing the sway of a trailer includes a first portion that is attached to a towing vehicle at any of several locations including an end portion of a receiver hitch, a bumper, a frame or body member, or by the use of a modified type of a drawbar having an offset member. A second portion is attached to a trailer at any of several locations including to a ball coupler by the use of an adapter plate, a modified ball coupler bracket, or directly to a tongue of the trailer. Intermediate the first and second portion at least one damper is disposed, preferably a hydraulic damper of the type that is generally used to form an automobile steering damper. The damper preferably includes spherical type bearings at each end thereof to allow for limited articulation about a point. A geometric arrangement (i.e., an angle) for the damper is provided whereby a sufficient dampening force is experienced the moment the trailer begins to deviate from normal.
