Abstract: A release tool is provided to aid in the unlocking of extending towing arms. The tool is adapted to fit a tow bar assembly that has a telescoping towing arm which is locked in an extended position by a slideable collar. The collar is moveable between a locked position and a released position. When in the locked position, the collar holds catches in engagement with legs of the towing arm to hold the legs fixed relative to each other. When in the released position, the legs are free to telescope relative to each other. Stress can build-up in the towing arms making it difficult to move the collar from the locked position to the released position. The release tool of the present invention provides a mechanical advantage to aid in the movement of the collar from the locked position to the released position. • Patent number: 5799531
Abstract: A crimping device for crimping end fittings on hoses and tubes includes a base ring and a pressure ring. The base ring includes a frustoconical inner surface in which is positioned a die assembly which, at its opposite end, abuts a portion of the pressure ring. When the pressure ring is pushed toward the base ring, the dies converge, crimping the fitting to the hose or tube. In order to properly locate the hose or tube, a locator pin is affixed to the pressure ring by an L-shaped bracket. The locator pin, pressure ring and crimping die assembly form a tool package which, upon being initially set, does not have to be reset for subsequent uses. The tool package can be stored while other tool packages of a similar configuration are set, used and then stored for subsequent use. In this way, the irritation and resulting inefficiency of having to continually reset tooling is minimized.

  • Patent number: 5743131
Abstract: There is disclosed a tool for connecting a cable fitting to the end of a coaxial cable. The tool is made up of one or more dies with a cavity therein, a carrier chuck which is axially spaced from the die surfaces to support the fitting in relation to the end of the cable, and a handle pivotally mounted to cause axial movement of the carrier chuck. The carrier chuck is pushed toward the die surfaces to axially force the fitting into the die cavity to reduce the circumference of one end of the fitting into a generally conical configuration securely engaging the cable. A radial ratchet mechanism on the handle prevents the carrier chuck from moving away from the die until the fitting has been fully and properly secured to the cable. The dies are specially shaped to have a guiding portion which smoothly and consistently guides the fitting into proper relation to the dies, and a stop limiting portion to prevent the fitting from being forced too far into the die.

Abstract: The disassembly of conduit fittings in vehicular sub-systems becomes very difficult and time consuming as a result of their location and the effect of corrosion. Various fittings have been designed to make this maintenance task less work for the mechanic. However, special tools must frequently be designed to provide for the hard to access locations and frozen joints that frequently exist. Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for shrinking a ring to be shrunk, placed around an object to be clamped on a cylindrical support and behind an axial obstacle connected to said support. The process comprises the following steps of: a) fitting a shrinking tool around the support, over the axial obstacle, until its jaws in expanded position are disposed in the radial plane of the ring to be shrunk, b) positioning in the jaws, by the rear of the axial obstacle, a spacer presenting a central opening adapted to the ring to be shrunk, and c) finally, tightening the shrinking tool to bring the jaws and the spacer that they contain in their retracted positions.

Abstract: A sucker rod coupling tool and method for either breaking or tightening the threaded joint between a sucker rod and the coupling that joins the sucker rod to the next sucker rod. A base plate has a backup wrench mounted to one end and a friction wrench actuated by a hydraulic piston pivotally affixed to the base plate at the other end. An inversion loop is affixed to the base plate and rotatably suspended below a control platform to accommodate inversion of the base plate along with the backup wrench and the friction wrench. The control platform also supports the control levers and can be raised and lowered to allow the backup wrench to engage the sucker rod.

  • Patent number: 5566438
Abstract: A tool for reconnecting a fuel hose safety break away. Various geometry safety break aways are attached to various diameter fuel hoses, typically above a person's head. These safety break aways separate if a vehicle drives away from a fuel pump with the fuel nozzle still attached to the vehicle. The tool of the present invention assists the person having to reconnect the two halves of the safety break away. While individual tools for various geometry safety break aways and different hose diameters can be made, so that a service station does not have to obtain several different tools for their various fuel pumps, the tool of the preferred embodiment has a plurality of user selectable jaws, the jaws having hose engaging portions with similar geometry to the hoses they are to engage.

  • Patent number: 5564177
Abstract: A fitting body is provided with a lip that protrudes radially from at least one of the side walls of the seal groove in the sealing face toward the other side wall to form an undercut whereby an annular seal is trapped axially behind the lip to prevent the annular seal from falling out of the groove. The lip is formed by forming the fitting body with a ledge that is integral with the fitting body and protrudes axially from the sealing face adjacent one of the side walls of the groove in the sealing face. The ledge is then flattened to form the lip and an annular seal such as an elastomeric O-ring seal is then inserted into the groove with the annular seal being mechanically trapped axially behind the lip to prevent the annular seal from falling out of the groove.

Abstract: A tool for releasing a connector from a fitting coupled together by a retainer element through movement of an integral release member mounted in the connector. The tool includes a pair of pivotally connected jaw levers, each with a bifurcated jaw end. The bifurcated jaws engage the connector and simultaneously slidably urge the release member into the connector to disengage the retainer element from the fitting to enable the decoupling and separation of the fitting and the connector. The jaws are of thin planer construction for insertion between the outer end of the release member and surrounding structure where access space is limited.

Abstract: Male fluid couplers (14) are attached to a control valve (94) mounted in a holder (96). Female fluid couplers (16) have their sleeve members (72) held in an aperture (108) in a sleeve member retainer (110) by snap rings (112). Lever arms (122 and 124) are attached to the sleeve member retainer (110) by pins (126 and 128). Pins (134 and 135) on the lever arms enter slots (136) in the male holder (96). Movement of the lever arms (122 and 124) moves the female couplers (16) into engagement with the male fluid couplers and allows locking balls (40) to move into locking ball grooves (38). Upon release of the handle (130), the spring (80) moves the sleeve member (72) in a position locking balls (40) in the grooves (38). Movement of the handle (130) in the opposite direction moves the sleeve members (72) into position to release the balls (40) from the grooves (38). Continued movement of the handle (130) moves the female couplers (16) from engagement with the male couplers (14).

Abstract: A hand held tool for the removal of vacuum hoses includes a removable grasping handle portion. An elongated slender shaft portion has a free end connected to the removable handle portion and a working end. A sharp edged, tapered, U-shaped slot is disposed on the working end of the elongated slender shaft portion. The working end has a taper for working the tool behind a hose which has its end pressed against a flush wall. A double fulcrum is provided to give a large mechanical advantage during early part of the pry to break a rubber hose free and then a smaller mechanical advantage during a later part of the pry to remove the hose more rapidly. Sharp edged, non-chamfered edges increase the surface contact area of the end of a hose and has a removable grasping handle. The sharp edged U-shaped slot for surrounds a significant portion of an exposed end of a hose so as to apply shear-type removal stress as near as possible to a frictionally resistive tube inserted in the hose.
