  • Patent number: 6052892
Abstract: An adaptor tool for mounting components on printed circuit boards. The adaptor tool has two capture members that define an opening sized to receive the component. The capture members are linked together such that the application of torque to the adaptor tool by a torque tool via a connector results in the two capture members frictionally engaging the component and transferring the torque to the component. This allows the component to be mounted to the printed circuit board to a desired degree of torque. The adaptor tool can be sized so as to be able to mount a cylindrical heat sink to a bracket on a printed circuit board to a desired degree of torque.

  • Patent number: 5544554
Abstract: An automatic assembly apparatus for repetitively driving fasteners into a work piece without having an operator's arms and wrists absorb torques generated during the fastening operation. A pneumatic torque wrench is mounted on a torque arm attached to a rigid surface. The torque wrench is free to move around any axis required for the application. All axis lock when the wrench is engaged, allowing the operator to remove his/her hands when the wrench is in operation. A combination of an air cylinder coupled to a compressive spring drives the wrench downward until the wrench is positioned at the fastener for torquing. Incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome or other similar repetitive stress injuries (RSI) are eliminated since the operator is allowed to remove his/her hands while the wrench is in operation. The mass of the wrench absorbs all the torque generated by the fastening operation.

  • Patent number: 5321506
Abstract: The invention is a method and apparatus for continuously monitoring the application of a coupling to a pipe. The invention operates in several modes. In the position mode, the apparatus rotates the coupling to a desired final position. In the program mode, the apparatus determines the actual location of the hand-tight plane and continuously monitors the torque applied and the number of turns of rotation of the coupling from the hand-tight plane to the desired final position. In either of these modes, the torque applied is monitored and rotation of the coupling is discontinued if a preset maximum torque value is exceeded. If the coupling is rotated to the desired final position without reaching a minimum torque, the pipe and coupling are rejected. An image processing system is employed to locate several critical make-up parameters.

  • Patent number: 5291645
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for feeding and tightening threaded parts, such as bolts or nuts. The apparatus incorporates a holding member longitudinally movable while holding a threaded part at the front end thereof, and a rotary feed rod having an engaging head at the front end thereof adapted to engage the threaded part. A retractable detecting member is used to detect the presence of a threaded part in the holding member. The rotary feed rod is longitudinally movable wherein, first, the holding member holds the threaded part at or adjacent the end of a part feeding passage and is then longitudinally moved to a position where the threaded part is coaxial with the feed rod. The engaging head of the feed rod is then advanced, and substantially at the same time as the engaging head engages the threaded part the holding member is moved backward to allow the feed rod to be advanced. Thus, the threaded part is fed to a mating part, such as a threaded hole or a bolt, and tightened.

  • Patent number: 5233742
Abstract: Make-up of a pipe section and coupling to form a tubular joint having proper stand-off at proper make-up torque is automatically controlled. The coupling is first rotated onto the pipe section to a hand-tight position and the length of the coupling and the distance from the open end of the coupling to the pin end of the pipe section are measured by a digital measuring device which inputs these measurements to a computer. The number of turns of the coupler required to attain optimum stand-off is calculated by the computer. The pipe section is held stationary and power tongs rotate the coupling further onto the pipe section while the applied torque and the number of turns are measured and provided as inputs to the computer. The computer determines that the made up tubular joint is acceptable or not acceptable during the rotation by determining if the stand-off is within a predetermined make-up stand-off range at the same time that the make-up torque is within a predetermined make-up torque range.

Abstract: An apparatus for performing at least one cycle of screwing and unscrewing of a screwthreaded joint for the assembly of tubes, which enables tightening of the joint with a high level of torque while avoiding damage to the screwthreads. The apparatus comprises two wrenches, each wrench engaging against a component of the joint, with each wrench comprising at least one mobile jaw which is slidable in a chamber. The mobile jaw is formed of a material which undergoes plastic deformation at the stress to which it is subjected in order to tighten or loosen the joint. This apparatus is used for bedding-in components of screwthreaded joints for tubes used in petroleum drilling operations.

Abstract: An extractor for a broken-off tool including a tap, drill, set screw, bolt, reamer and dowel retained within a bore in a workpiece comprises a body, there being an axial bore in the body opening at its top and towards its bottom terminating in a tapered conical throat and a coaxial cylindrical neck of reduced diameter communicating with the throat and depending from the body. The neck is adapted to nest within and protectively engage the workpiece bore and engage the workpiece. The bore, throat and neck are adapted to loosely receive a flux-coated welding rod at one end bearing against the broken tool and adjacent its other end being connected to an electrical power source, whereby on application of sufficient electrical power, the welding rod within the throat forms a weld mass interconnecting the body and the broken tool, rotation of the body withdrawing the broken tool from the workpiece.

Abstract: A tool for removing a faucet stem and cartridge from a faucet body; the stem of the type having a threaded outer end; the cartridge of the type having a central bore retaining the stem; the bore including an inward facing ledge. A cylindrical standoff sleeve has an inner end for bearing against the faucet body. A rod passes through the standoff sleeve. The rod has, on its very inner end, threads for engaging the stem threads and, above that, a device for engaging a cartridge inward facing ledge. Rod outer end includes a threaded section. A rotatable handle threads on the rod outer end and bears against the standoff sleeve outer end such that rotation of the handle moves the rod axially relative to the standoff sleeve for extracting the stem and cartridge after engagement.

Abstract: An automatic screwdriver is mounted on a cantilevered support to move horizontally to various positions above a workpiece and also to move vertically to drive screws into the workpiece. A depending handle with a hand grip is used to steer the screwdriver horizontally. Up and down movement of the handle relative to the screwdriver causes a power actuator to shift the screwdriver vertically to drive a screw and to retract the screwdriver preparatory to driving of the next screw. The handle may be selectively pivoted between positions enabling either right-hand or left-hand operation of the handle.

  • Patent number: 5105519
Abstract: A tension contol method for a nutrunner performed by the use of a nutrunner and a controller associated with each other. In accordance with the present invention, the fastening torque T.sub.f of the torque transducer of the nutrunner at an intermediate position of a fixed first rotation angle .theta. included in a middle range from the seating of a controlled screw on a tightened object to the final fastening position of the screw is stored. The motor of the nutrunner is stopped at a position of a second rotation angle (.theta.+.alpha.) larger than the first rotation angle by a fixed value .alpha.. The motor of the nutrunner is reversed at the second rotation angle (.theta.+.alpha.). A return torque T.sub.r of the motor at the position of the first rotation angle .theta. is stored. The ratio of the fastening torque T.sub.f to a bolt tension F applied to the screw is calculated by the use of a difference between the fastening torque T.sub.f and the return torque T.sub.
