The seal plate also includes a seal lip extending from a periphery of the sealing portion and a cavity located in the second side, with the cavity circumscribed by the sealing portion. The seal plate further includes at least one purge port extending from the first side to the cavity. Each purge port is in fluid communication with the cavity.

Then at a later date when the region needs to be accessed, the dimple is ground off so as to form the pocket into a throughgoing hole and thereby expose the region through the hole so that a tool can act on the region through the hole.

    Abstract: This invention relates generally to a method for repairing a casting, and more specifically to a method of repairing a casting by pouring melted filler material into a damaged portion of the original casting. Damaged cast metal components, such as a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine are repaired by preheating the component to a first preheat temperature. The damaged area of the casting is then heated to a higher temperature using a torch and melted filler material is poured into the casting. The torch is used to maintain the temperature of the melted material for thirty seconds to two minutes. The temperature of the filler material is then cooled using compressed air.

    Abstract: A method for applying diffusion aluminide coating on a selective area of a turbine engine component and the coating produced by that method is disclosed. A quartz infrared lamp heats only substantially the localized area of the component to be coated, rather than the complete part. Either halide activated or non-activated tape is applied on the area to be coated and is held in place during coating using a high temperature dimensionally stable tape holder manufactured from graphite or ceramic. The quartz infrared lamp is used to heat only the desired area to a coating temperature of about 1800° F. to about 2000° F. under an inert atmosphere for about 3 to about 8 hours to achieve the desired aluminide coating thickness. No powder masking of the machined surface area is required. Due to the localized heating, aluminum vapor generated from the tape will only deposit aluminide coating on the taped area.

    Abstract: A nickel-base superalloy article, such as a gas turbine stationary flowpath shroud that has previously been in service, is repaired by applying a restoration coating to a surface of the article. The restoration coating is applied by providing a precursor mixture, wherein the precursor mixture has no more than about 15 weight percent chromium and no more than about 0.01 percent yttrium, and wherein the precursor mixture includes a higher-melting-point alloy component and a lower-melting-point alloy component. The precursor mixture is applied to the surface of the article, in a form such as a preform of the alloy components. The article with the precursor mixture applied to the surface thereof is heated to a sufficiently high temperature to melt the lower-melting-point alloy component, thereby forming the restoration coating on the surface of the article.

    Abstract: Using sinker electrode discharge machining tools, damaged portions of partitions of the turbine which have been removed and replaced with weld material of increased thickness may be shaped and contoured to blend with the suction and pressure sides of the partitions. The diaphragm containing the partitions is located in a tank containing dielectric material. A numerically controlled EDM machine directs first and second sinker EDM tools having surfaces corresponding to designed surfaces of the trailing edge portions of the partitions applied to contour and shape the opposite surfaces of the weld material to blend with the pressure and suction sides of the partitions. A third EDM tool is used to shape the juncture at opposite ends of each partition with the arcuate surfaces of the inner and outer bands.

The method of using the system comprises locating a defect in the cast article, providing a repair material to the defect site, melting the repair material and cast article at the defect site, and cooling the molten repair material and portion of the casting article such that they resolidify and fuse together. The method may further comprise removing a portion of the cast article at the defect site, removal of excess repair material and inspecting the cast article following repair of the defect.

This closure piece is located inside a recess (15) in the component, whereby the recess is arranged so that it is imbedded completely in the cast material, and completely covers the core opening. Because of this installation, the closure piece is fixed in a form-fitting manner in the direction of two spatial axes, so that the closure piece only needs to be secured with an additional joint in the installation direction. It is preferred that the installation direction is normal in relation to the direction of maximal stress of the closure piece, so that a joint is subject to a relatively small stress and therefore can be produced with little expenditure and a high degree of operational safety.

One method includes removing a loosened bolt, and plugging and countersinking the bolt hole. The surface is then prepared for welding a stud onto it to complete the repair. In the case where the original bolt is damaged but has not been loosened, the top part of the bolt can be cut off so that the bolt can serve as the plug.

    Abstract: A method of repairing a cylinder head of a water cooled internal combustion engine that has damage to the boundary wall between a cooling water passage and the combustion chamber. According to the method. the boundary wall B located between a cooling water passage and a combustion chamber and including a crack is cut away from a cylinder head until the cut reaches a depth of one half the cross section of the cooling water passage. Then, a half-pipe portion. having a semicircular cross section that is equal in size to one-half the cross section of the cooling water passage is fixed in the cylinder head from which the boundary wall B has been removed such that an inner surface of the half-pipe may serve to form a cooling water passage after repair. With the use of the above method, the repair operation is completed easily with a low cost because the boundary wall B has only to be cut away to a shallow depth.
