  • Patent number: 8230594
Abstract: A tube matrix and the corresponding method of joining a plurality of tubes to a base plate to create the tube matrix. The tube matrix has a base plate from which a plurality of parallel tubes extend. The base plate has holes formed though it to receive the tubes. The tubes are placed into the holes on the base plate. The tubes may have end flares that abut against the base plate and prevent the tubes from completely passing through the base plate. Once the tubes are in place in the holes of the base plate, the tubes and base plate are welded together with individual laser welds. The laser welds enable a very dense matrix of tubes to be welded to the base plate without damaging or obstructing the tubes.

  • Patent number: 7114230
Abstract: A method for automatically setting valve clearances in internal combustion engines (also known as “tappet setting” or “valve lash setting”) comprises a series of steps in which a rocker arm is set to a zero position that is recorded as a reference datum and an adjustment screw is then operated to set the rocker arm to a first reference position. The adjustment screw is then rotated through a predetermined angle so that the rocker arm is moved to a second reference position. The difference between the first and second reference positions and the predetermined angle are used to determine a coefficient relating the angular movement of the adjustment screw to linear movement of the rocker arm. The coefficient is then used to calculate the angular rotation of the adjustment screw required to set a predetermined valve clearance relative to the zero position. The initial adjustment of the rocker arm position serves to neutralize backlash in the valve drive train prior to setting the valve clearance.

  • Patent number: 6981302
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a tube for a vehicle driveshaft assembly forms a flat sheet of material having a greater thickness than other portions over a portion of its width and along its length, rolling the sheet about a longitudinal axis such that its lateral edges are mutually adjacent, then securing the lateral edges together by seam welding to form a tube. The mass distribution is not uniform because the wall thickness of certain portions of the tube is greater than the wall thickness of other portions of the tube. A tube yoke is machined and the angular location of its overbalance about its longitudinal axis is determined. The tube is secured to the tube yoke such that the angular location of overbalance of the yoke is aligned with the weld seam and diametrically opposite the region of the tube having the greater wall thickness.

Abstract: A novel insert assembly for use in snowboards and other sporting equipment provides for embedded insert location, regardless of the properties of the insert material per se, and without requiring either expensive equipment or a complex location process. This is achieved by positioning a small inexpensive magnet on or within the insert cavity, or placing a plug-like magnet in the open threaded end of the inserts. After the board assembly is complete, a magnetic material such as iron powder is dusted on the surface of the board to react with the field lines created about each insert, revealing the insert location. Then, the board can be drilled to pierce the insert cap, and facilitate removal of any plug in the insert. It is also possible to provide, through powdered metal technology, an insert material which itself will produce the desired magnetic field of sufficient intensity at the dusted surface of the board.

  • Patent number: 4141456
Abstract: The device includes an alignment station at which an operator can align a wafer under a microscope. Once the wafer is properly aligned, a transfer chuck is brought into position above the wafer and aligned with alignment pins located in fixed positions at the alignment station. The wafer is then fixed to the transfer chuck and released from the alignment station. The transfer chuck is moved into proper alignment with alignment pins at a remote operation station, such as an automatic scribing station. The invention allows the operator to view the wafer with semiconductor devices facing the operator and provides for flipping the wafer over through the use of the transfer chuck so that the laser scriber can scribe the wafer on the side away from the semiconductor devices.

  • Patent number: 4096964
Abstract: An electrical outlet box having a center threaded post is fastened solidly to a wall stud at a prescribed elevation above floor level. A section of dry wall is brought into position and a dry wall penetrating means temporarily telescoped with said post is employed to produce a locator opening through the dry wall section coaxially with the outlet box. A cutter means centered on the locator opening is employed to remove a plug of dry wall to thereby form a dry wall opening in registration with the mouth of the outlet box. The dry wall penetrating means is separated from the outlet box post and a unit for switches and/or receptacles including a cover plate is introduced through the dry wall opening into the mouth of the outlet box and secured by engagement of a single center screw fastener with the threaded post.

  • Patent number: 4067098
Abstract: A method of manufacturing brake drums or the like and apparatus therefor that minimizes scrap rates by improving as-manufactured balance. In accordance with the disclosed method, the casting rim of the brake drum is located in a press by centering the drum relative to its outer surface. Locating holes are then accurately formed in the drum center by the press prior to machining of the drum inner surface. The subsequent machining operation on the drum inner surface is accomplished by locating the drum accurately via the locating holes formed in the press operation.
