The surgical instrument includes a housing and an elongated shaft that extends distally from the housing and defines a first longitudinal axis. The surgical instrument also includes a firing rod disposed in the elongated shaft and a drive mechanism disposed at least partially within the housing. The drive mechanism mechanically cooperates with the firing rod to move the firing rod. A motion sensor senses a change in the electric field (e.g., capacitance, impedance, or admittance) between the firing rod and the elongated shaft. The measurement unit determines a parameter of the motion of the firing rod, such as the position, speed, and direction of the firing rod, based on the sensed change in the electric field. A controller uses the measured parameter of the motion of the firing rod to control the drive mechanism.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying a potential movement of a part containing features. First lines are formed by a computer system on a plane extending from a rotation point on the plane to centers of the features in a feature pattern. Second lines are formed by the computer system on the plane extending from the centers of the features in which the second lines are substantially perpendicular to corresponding first lines. Third lines are formed by the computer system extending from ends of the second lines in which the third lines are substantially perpendicular to the plane. Elongate volumes are formed by the computer system extending from the centers of the features to ends of the third lines. An intersection of the elongate volumes is formed by the computer system. The potential movement of the part containing the features is identified using the intersection.

Abstract: A system and method for predicting wallboard fire performance in a standard test includes procuring a sample of the wallboard for testing, and mounting the sample into a fixture so that one side of the sample is exposed to a heat source. A cavity is created between the sample and the fixture such that the sample is disposed between the heat source and the cavity. A temperature measurement is taken at a predetermined location within the cavity over time, and the temperature is monitored and recorded as a series of temperature readings using a computer-readable medium. The series is analyzed to determine an index time at which the temperature reaches a predetermined temperature threshold. The index time is correlated to a standard-test fire performance using the computer-readable medium and, based on the correlation, a fire performance of the wallboard in a standard test procedure is predicted.
