Rotary Tool Holder Patents (Class 29/40)
  • Patent number: 4302870
Abstract: An indexable revolving turret has a rotary tool carrier which is movable to a plurality of angularly spaced indexed positions, and an indexing shaft which is connected with the tool carrier for indexing the same to the respective ones of these positions. Cooperating spur gears are provided on the tool carrier and on the housing and become disengaged preliminarily to indexing of the tool carrier. A control shaft is driven by a drive so as to be rotated by the same and transmits motion to a Maltese-cross drive, an input member of which is mounted on and rotatable with the control shaft. The indexing shaft can be moved axially of itself, thereby moving the tool carrier into and out of indexing position, and for this purpose a cam drum is mounted on the control shaft and the cam follower slides in a cam groove of the cam drum and is connected with the indexing shaft so as to move the same into and out of an indexing position, depending upon the angular position of the cam drum.

  • Patent number: 4090281
Abstract: A machine tool includes a turret having a plurality of machine tool spindles for carrying individual cutting tools. The turret rotates in a horizontal plane about a vertical column and is supported on the column by a yoke having yoke arms projecting through slots in the column. A ball nut assembly mounted on the yoke and rotated by a motor driven screw provides vertical height adjustment of the turret and the tool spindles. The turret is selectively indexable about the vertical axis of the column to position the appropriate tool spindle in a machining position. A spindle drive motor carried by the yoke and located within the column is moved in the direction of tool feed to engage a coupling on the selected indexed tool spindle and rotate the tool carried by the spindle. Spindles can be employed with their own feed and drive independent of the turret feed and drive. The column and turret are supported on a saddle which is movable on horizontally extending ways by a lead screw for cutting feed.

  • Patent number: 4087890
Abstract: A compound lathe in which a headstock is horizontally movable along a spindle axis to provide longitudinal feeding of a workpiece mounted for rotation with the spindle and a saddle carrying a turret is vertically movable to provide transverse feeding. The saddle is slidably disposed on vertical guideways which is formed on a column mounted on a bed at the back of the headstock rearwardly of cutting areas of the workpiece and which vertically extends in a plane parallel to the axis of the spindle. The turret supports tools for turning, milling, drilling and other operations. Numerically controlled servo motors preferably position the headstock and saddle. A secondary workpiece gripping means is provided to grip the end of the workpiece opposite the headstock and is releasably connected to the headstock for movement therewith. The gripping means allows accurate secondary machining of the cut-off portion of a parted workpiece by the tools on the turret.

  • Patent number: 4054975
Abstract: Tools on a lathe having an automatically indexable and translatable turret are powered and controlled by automatically driving the turret to one or more predetermined positions to automatically couple or uncouple one or more detachable power coupling devices which connect power and/or control signals to turret-carried tools while the turret is translated to perform machining operations. Means are shown for effecting flexible mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and/or pneumatic power and control signals to turret-carried devices.

  • Patent number: 4051583
Abstract: A machine tool having a frame, a turret head rotatably mounted upon the frame, at least one tool spindle rotatably supported within the turret head, first coupling means mounted upon the tool spindle, and second coupling means slidably and rotatably mounted within the frame and adapted to engage with the first coupling means of the tool spindle positioned at an operative position so as to transmit a driving power to the tool spindle. Within the turret head there is mounted angular maintenance means for maintaining the tool spindle in a first predetermined angular position. Within the frame there are mounted release means for releasing the tool spindle positioned at the operative position from the angular maintenance means, orienting means for positioning the second coupling means to a second predetermined angular position, and means for moving the second coupling means positioned at the second predetermined angular position into and out of engagement with the first coupling means.

  • Patent number: 3955257
Abstract: A turret head for a rotary turning machine having a base rotatably mounted on a cross-slide for movement about a first axis. The turret head is mounted to the base for rotatable movement relative thereto about a second axis that is inclined to the first axis by an angle .alpha.. The turret head includes two rings or annular arrays of tool holders. Each ring has its tools disposed so that their axes lie on the surface of an imaginary cone having a vertex angle of 2.beta., such that .alpha. + .beta. = 90.degree.. The two imaginary cones have their axes coincide with the second axis and preferably the vertices of the cones coincide, so that the cones are mirror images of each other.
