Abstract: Apparatus and method precisely preload bearings onto shafts. A swivel plate swivels up to 360° and locks a rotary shaft axially with a motor shaft. A shim and bearing adjacent the shim preload onto shaft shoulder by lock nut secured to the threaded shaft. The lock nut forces the bearing inner race to expand outwardly, preloading the bearing. A force sensor measures torque on the bearing outer race. Measured torque is monitored within a predetermined range to establish the precisely loaded bearing. The method slides a shim onto support shaft shoulder. A bearing is slid onto tapered surface, and lock nut tightened onto the threaded shaft. The lock nut expands the bearing inner race, reducing the distance between the inner and outer races and preloading the bearing. The outer race at a predetermined, constant speed has torque monitored to a predetermined range to provide a precisely preloaded bearing.

Abstract: A control system and method for automatic fastening machines wherein a multi-axes motion controller is utilized in place of the conventional PLC or CNC control to provide for virtually an immediate change in system response when the systems feedback devices indicate the need for variance. The major advantage of the process control approach of the present invention is that all system feedback information is controlled via a single on board processor thus eliminating any communication lag associated with multi controller applications. This also provides for an improvement in fastener installation cycle time. An additional advantage to the approach of the present invention is the elimination of many mechanical hard stops and their respective electrical position switch indicators, which in turn reduces the chance for machine breakdowns resulting in a greater increase in productivity.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for mounting electronic components in which mounting positions are determined by observing identification marks A, B, C and D on a substrate with a camera. The electronic components are mounted on the substrate by correcting programmed data according to the result of the determination of the mounting positions. Correction values are obtained for coordinates of the mounting position with reference to each of a plurality of combinations of any three positions (e.g. A, B and C) selected among the at least four positions of the identification marks A, B, C and D based on coordinate data of the three selected positions before and after deformation (one based on the design data and the other based on the data determined during mounting process). A correction of the programmed data for coordinates of the mounting position is made using a positional correction value, which is a mean value of the correction values.

Abstract: An apparatus for installing a snap ring comprises an inner press assembly which is spring biased downwardly from an upper press assembly. The inner press assembly includes a plurality of arms having first ends having an abutment surface adjacent a notch. During installation of the snap ring, the upper press assembly and inner press assembly move toward a component which receives the snap ring, such that the first ends of the arms abut the snap ring. The snap ring is thus moved downwardly into the component. If the snap ring expands radially outwardly into the snap ring groove, the abutment moves past the snap ring and the notches receive the snap ring. If the snap ring does not expand sufficiently radially outwardly into the snap ring groove, the abutment surface of the arms contacts the snap ring, thereby resisting downward movement of the inner press assembly. There is then relative axial movement between the inner press assembly and the upper press assembly.
