More specifically, the fan assembly utilizes a hub ring and one or more hub strips to support a plurality of blades rather than a solid center disc or end disc used by some prior approaches. In another aspect, a method is provided that includes bending a member into an annular configuration and joining end portions of the member together to rigidly fix the member in the annular configuration. The rigid annular member may be used as an end ring, a hub ring, an orifice, or other component, while producing significantly less scrap material than traditional approaches.

  • Patent number: 8720061
Abstract: A method for forming an inclined-blade blower wheel is provided by arranging a plurality of blades about respective circumferences of first and second end caps. The plurality of blades extend longitudinally between the first and second end caps and parallel to an axis defined by respective centers of the first and second end caps. The first end cap is rotated with respect to the second end cap a predetermined amount, therein skewing the plurality of blades at a desired longitudinal pitch between the first end cap and second end cap. The first end cap and second end cap are then rotated in unison while crimping the circumferences of the first end cap and second end cap, therein securing the plurality of blades to the first and second end caps and fixing the desired longitudinal pitch of the plurality of blades from the first end cap to the second end cap.

Abstract: A method and ground support equipment (GSE) for attaching an engine core to an engine fan module on an aircraft pylon. The GSE may comprise GSE supports and lifting components attached to the pylon, two suspension rails attached to the lifting components, two translating rails translatably attached to the two suspensions rails and fixedly attached to opposite sides of the engine core, and two alignment fittings fixed to the engine fan module. The method of using the GSE may comprise lifting the engine core vertically using the lifting components and anchoring the suspension rails to the alignment fittings. The translating rails and engine core may then be translated in an aft-to-forward direction such that portions of the translating rails engage portions of the alignment fittings to cooperatively guide the translating rails into a final forward position in which the engine core is aligned relative to the engine fan module.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for inserting blades into a centrifugal blasting wheel to install blades without injury to fingers or hands. The apparatus uses a rotatable blade retainer with a blade guide slot that allows each blade to be installed through the blade guide slot while other installed blades are supported by the outer surface of the rotatable blade retainer. Once all blades are safely installed, the center section of the centering plate is inserted to cover the rotatable blade retainer.

Abstract: The described embodiments relate generally to optimizing airflow in a computer system. By modifying the external surface of centrifugal cooling fan enclosures the pressure drop associated with airflow moving around the enclosures can be reduced. This is generally accomplished by rounding off hard edges from the outside of the cooling fan enclosure as well as forming cover surfaces rather than simply using flat cover surfaces. In some cases this can also involve modifying the shape of the fan inlet, or even contouring the shape of the cooling fan blades to allow air to flow more easily through the computer enclosure.

  • Patent number: 8272129
Abstract: The air cycle machine insert and method of repair provides an economical repair of the turbine housing section of an air cycle machine, rather than scrapping the component and replacing with a new section. The toroid shaped insert or liner has a U-shaped cross section, configured to fit closely within the turbine air passage of the air cycle machine. A throat insert is also provided. The existing throat flange extending outwardly over the turbine air passage is removed for installation of the insert. High temperature silicone sealant is preferably placed between the wall of the turbine air passage and the liner, after machining the air passage wall to remove irregularities. The liner is then installed and mechanically secured with one or more rivets, the throat insert is installed to replace the previously removed throat flange, and the repaired turbine housing reassembled with the air cycle machine to complete the repair.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of producing a stator blade for use in a turbo-molecular pump. The method includes subjecting a metal plate to a slitting process to form a blade element having an upstream edge surface and a downstream edge surface, wherein a laser beam is emitted onto the metal plate at an incident angle oblique to a principal surface of the metal plate. Thus, the upstream edge surface and/or the downstream edge surface can be formed to extend obliquely relative to the principal surface of the metal plate, in a simple manner, while eliminating a need for a burr removal operation which would otherwise be necessary in a punching-based slitting process.
