Abstract: An interlocking nut and washer system complies with new standards identified in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Recommended Practice J2535, Setting Preload in Heavy-Duty Wheel Bearings, and with maintenance recommendations issued by the Technology Maintenance Council (TMC) Recommended Practice RP618, Wheel Bearing Adjustment Procedure. The system includes an improved inner washer, adjustment nut, intermediate washer, and outer nut that interlocks with the intermediate washer following the introduction of an established level of preload force by the adjustment nut. The inner washer isolates the adjustment nut from the inner bearing race to eliminate frictional wear. An increase in outer diameter of the inner washer provides an interference capability that serves as a safety factor to prevent separation of the wheel hub from the axle spindle in event of bearing failure. The inner washer includes markers to establish the final adjusted preload or the endplay position of the adjustment nut.

Abstract: A bearing support for facilitating removal and replacement of a bearing and supporting the rotatable shaft while the bearing is removed from the shaft. The bearing support includes a bearing support including a bearing mounting structure for being supported on the machine. A bearing assembly is provided for receiving a portion of the shaft. A bearing housing assembly is positioned between the bearing assembly and the bearing mounting structure. The bearing assembly is supported on the bearing housing assembly and the bearing housing assembly is supported on the bearing mounting structure. The bearing housing assembly is removable from the bearing mounting structure prior to removal of the bearing assembly from the shaft for facilitating removal of the bearing assembly from the shaft. Another aspect of the invention includes a shaft support system for facilitating removal and replacement of a bearing assembly adapted for supporting a shaft on a machine.

Abstract: A system is provided for securing a rotating member with respect to a non-rotating member. A hollow member, such as an inner ring of a bearing assembly, includes an extension having an annular outer groove. A tapered sleeve serves to lock the hollow member about a mechanical component, such as a shaft. A nut engageable on the sleeve includes an eccentric front aperture adjacent to a concentric groove, thereby forming a lip of varying depth. The system is engaged by rotation of the nut on the sleeve in one direction, and disassembled by counterrotation of the nut such that a portion of the varying depth lip co-acts with a lip formed by the groove of the hollow member.

  • Patent number: 6484403
Abstract: A method for converting a locomotive traction motor originally equipped with sleeve bearings to roller bearings is provided. The ensuing method includes removing all parts of the original motor leaving only the motor frame. Recesses are then machined in the motor frame at both the pinion end and commutator end. The recesses are sized accordingly, to receive the roller bearings, which have a larger diameter then the sleeve bearings. Upper and lower frame inserts, each having an additional mounting opening, are then mounted to the machined frame to increase the strength and stiffness around the machined regions. A replacement axle is then equipped with the roller bearings, a pair of labyrinth seals, a gear and a pair of wheels. A pair of bearing housings may then be placed over the roller bearings. Each bearing housings has a reservoir that when the traction motor is assembled, is in communication with the roller bearings.

  • Patent number: 6418600
Abstract: A universal bearing puller and installer for removing and installing bearings. The inventive device includes an extractor tool. The extractor tool is comprised of a cylindrical housing. The cylindrical housing is split longitudinally into a pair of sections. The tabs of the pair of sections have corresponding coupling means to facilitate securement of the sections together thereby forming the cylindrical housing. An open upper end of the cylindrical housing has a plate disposed therein. The plate has a threaded aperture disposed centrally therethrough. The threaded aperture receives a screw therein. A first adapter is dimensioned for being received within an open lower end of the cylindrical housing. The first adapter is adapted for tapered roller bearings. A second adapter is dimensioned for being received within an open lower end of the cylindrical housing. The second adapter is adapted for ball bearings.

  • Patent number: 6401338
Abstract: A method of removing a bearing insert from a skate wheel is performed utilizing a bearing insert tool. The bearing insert has a central axial bore corresponding to the diameter of a central axial bore of a spacer element. A transverse bore is formed through a middle portion of the spacer element. The spacer element middle portion has a larger outer circumference than that of its opposed side portions. The spacer element opposed side portions mount within the inner circumference of the bearing inserts such that inner side walls of the bearing inserts abut opposed side walls of the spacer element middle portion. The bearing insert tool has a shaft containing spring activated nipples on a distal end. A button on the tool head portion operates the spring. To remove the bearing inserts the button is depressed retracting the nipples. The shaft is then inserted within the central axial bore of the spacer element through the proximal bearing insert.

Abstract: A workpiece holder for a press tool has a mounting ring which carries a circular retainer ring for frictionally engaging the inside of the workpiece and has a non-planar or curved end face engaged with a complimentary shaped end face of a body of the pressing tool to permit relative angular movement between the mounting ring and pressing tool body. This permits the axis of the mounting ring and hence, the axis of the workpiece carried by the mounting ring, to be angularly inclined relative to the axis of the pressing tool body to permit substantially coaxial insertion of the workpiece into a bore of a body even when the axis of the pressing tool body is angularly offset or skewed relative to the axis of the bore.

Abstract: A blind hole bushing puller and method, wherein the puller comprises: a rectangular cross block having a first end-portion and a second end portion, a pair of elongated leg screws, a circular bushing insert, and a bolt with a matching washer and a nut. Each of the end-portions of the cross block have a threaded leg hole formed therethrough, the cross block also has a centrally located unthreaded cross block hole. One of the leg screws passes through one of the threaded leg holes, and the other leg screw passes through the other threaded leg hole. The bushing insert has a centrally located unthreaded bushing insert hole and is sized to snugly fit about an inside diameter of the bushing. The bolt is sized to pass through the bushing insert hole and the cross block hole with a head of the bolt being positioned adjacent an upper portion of the bushing insert.

Abstract: An electrical and electronic equipment installation pad includes a precast concrete support slab 40 having an electrically conductive pathway disposed therein. The pathway may be comprised of a plurality of steel reinforcing rods 42 welded to one another to form a grid 44. Coil loop inserts 46 disposed within the slab 40 and welded to the grid 44 receive electrically conductive bolts for securing the equipment 20 on the slab 40. Galvanized inserts 48, 50 having bolts 52, 54 extending therefrom are also disposed within the slab 40 and welded to the grid 44. Ground rod leads 34 from ground rods 36 installed in the ground proximate to the pad 10 are connected to the galvanized inserts 48, 50 providing a path for fault currents from the equipment 20 through the grid 44 to ground. The pad 10 may be used to install equipment 20 at a desired location by first securing the equipment 20 on the pad 10 while the pad 10 is at a location remote from the desired location and then moving the pad 10 to the desired location.
