    Abstract: A method of manufacturing a guide plate for use in a chip carrier socket or other electrical connector provides the precision required for close-center line spacing while minimizing the cost associated with production. A block of ceramic or the like is ground to the precise outside dimensions required. Grooves are then cut in the block of ceramic, and the ceramic is then sliced into respective guide plates. The guide plates are inserted into openings provided in the electrical connector an retained therein. The grooves are dimensioned to cooperate with contact pins of the electrical connector to precisely maintain the pins in position, whereby when a chip is positioned in the electrical connector, the pins will be in position to make an electrical connection with the pads of the chip.

    Abstract: Surface anomalies on pipe are removed preparatory to corrosion coating. The removal is conducted by brushing with wire brush elements or COMAX brush elements which may rotate about axes parallel to the pipe axis or substantially radially off the pipe. Both kinds of brush elements may be used in combination. Before subjecting the pipe to brushing, the surface is particulate blasted to remove ferric oxide and better expose surface anomolies. After wire brushing, the surface is again particulate blasted to provide an anchor pattern of indentations promoting adhesion of the coating.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for repairing machine drive elements and particularly vehicle flywheels in situ. The apparatus includes a jig assembly mountable on a transmission housing and provided with a supporting surface including a slide mount assembly adapted to receive, in succession, welding and grinding tools for first building up a damaged or broken flywheel tooth, and then grinding the built-up tooth to original specifications. The slide mount assembly permits movement of the tools in two mutually perpendicular directions to permit alignment at the work site. The jig assembly also includes a turning gear designed to mesh with the flywheel for aligning a damaged or broken tooth at the work site.

    Abstract: A method of making a cage for use in a roller bearing comprises the steps of forming an inner circumferential groove centrally in an annular-shaped workpiece made of metal to define a circumferentially-extending side ring section on either side of the groove, punching the workpiece to form a plurality of axially-extending, circumferentially spaced-apart pockets for receiving rollers, and roughly abrading the outer peripheral surface of the workpiece. The punching and abrading steps inherently cause the outer peripheral surface of the workpiece at the side ring sections to become wavy, with a plurality of alternating recessed and raised portions. As a result of the abrading step, the difference in depth between the tops of the raised portions and the recessed portions is in the range of between approximately 60 .mu.m to 70 .mu.m.

    Abstract: A fuel injection valve comprising a main fuel injection valve body containing an electromagnetic coil which is operative to displace a movable core having a valve rod attached to the core. The valve rod has an end with a valve body adapted to selectively engage a valve seat-forming member attached to the valve body. The valve seat-forming member has an interior including a guide bore for guiding opening and closing displacement movements of the valve rod. The guide bore has a uniform diameter throughout its entire length and is connected to a valve seat formed at the end of the guide bore in continuation thereof. A fuel discharge port is formed in continuation of the valve seat. The guide bore is straight and has a burnished surface and the valve seat also has a burnished surface for contact by the valve body. The guide bore is connected to the valve seat without any undercut and due to the burnishing, the guide bore and valve seat are connected without flashing.

    Abstract: A camshaft is prepared from separately formed cams and a shaft. The cams may for example be formed by sintering. The cams are provided with holes which are under-sized and are provided with serrations. They are located on a correspondingly shaped dummy shaft in their required relative orientations and angular positions. Next, the cams are clamped in these positions and the dummy shaft removed. The cams are then heated to red heat and the serrated holes in them broached to bring them to their final size and to concentricity. Finally, a shaft having an exterior profile corresponding to the shape and size of the broached profile of the holes, at ambient temperature, is introduced into the holes and the cams are then cooled so that they shrink fit on to the shaft so ensuring that they are accurately positioned on the shaft. The cams are then released from the jig to give a finished camshaft.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for repairing worn labyrinth seal flanges. The seal flanges are repaired by spin-forming them to increase their radial height to at least equal that of an unworn labyrinth seal. A tool for carrying out the process has a pair of parallel rollers displaced a constant distance which is advanced radially inwardly over the seal flange so as to deform the sides and cause the material to creep in a radially outward direction to increase the height of the flange. The flange may be ground to remove any residual defects caused by the spin-forming operation.
