  • Patent number: 5862588
Abstract: A method for producing interconnect structures and circuit boards including placing an area array component having connection bumps on the corresponding metal contacts on a substrate disposed on a backing plate, providing heat curable joining material in communication with the bumps and contacts, contacting a gas nozzle directly to a portion of the substrate surrounding the component to press the substrate between the nozzle and the backing plate to restrain the substrate from wrapping, heating the component, the joining material and the substrate proximate the metal contacts while maintaining the nozzle on the substrate to cure the joining material, and cooling the component, the joining material and the substrate. Selected components can also be replaced utilizing the gas nozzle for restraining the substrate from wrapping.

  • Patent number: 5649277
Abstract: An apparatus and process for the free-forming manufacture of three-dimensal components. A powder-binder mixture, or a material with a high melting point, is plasticized or made molten, by raising the temperature inside a process chamber. The resulting molten material is discharged under pressure through a nozzle which is arranged at the end of the process chamber. The material inside the process chamber is deposited in layers. The processing direction and processing speed of the nozzle are programmed. An embodiment of the invention is disclosed in which a non-molten powder is deposited and supported by the deposition of a second powder alongside the non-molten powder.

  • Patent number: 5416965
Abstract: An enclosure system for use in on-site installation of vehicle glass includes a stationary frame for mounting to the roof of a conventional van, and a movable frame adapted for movement relative to the stationary frame. The movable frame is movable between a storage position and an extended position, in which it is positioned over the vehicle in which glass is to be installed. A curtain is mounted to a channel track system associated with the movable frame, for enclosing the portion of the vehicle in which the glass is to be installed. The movable frame includes a series of transparent panels, which cooperate with the curtain to define a temporary enclosure about a portion of the vehicle. A heater is employed to heat the enclosure in the event the ambient temperature is too low to allow a glass installation to take place. The transparent panels function to keep precipitation off the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5335410
Abstract: An ultra small diameter reinforced catheter or tubular product is produced by winding reinforcing stands on the surface of a plastic tube and introducing the same into a heated die which compresses the strands against the tubing and at the same time heats and softens superficial portions of the tubing wall with simultaneously applying both conductive and radiant heat. This allows the strands to sink into the tubing wall. Following this, the compression and the conductive heating a removed while the tubing continues to be exposed to radiant heat from the die. During this last stage, the tension in the strands induces the strands to assume a predetermined position between the inner and outer surfaces of the tubing.

  • Patent number: 5097585
Abstract: A multi-walled composite tube member is formed from two superimposed pipes having a gap therebetween. The inner pipe is forcibly expanded in excess of the gap to deform and expand the outer pipe. The expander including a mandrel is forced through the aligned pipes while maintaining the longitudinal alignment. The diameter of the mandrel corresponding to the final desired diameter to finally size the composite pipe section and establish a true round inner passage. An induction heating coil operating at a low frequency operating in the range of low hundreds hertz in contrast to a conventional high frequency unit operating at thousands of hertz is coupled to and moved relative to the expanded pipe unit, progressively heats small lengths of the expanded pipe unit. The expanded pipe unit is quenched with a chilled brine solution applied to both surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4644624
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of half bearings with flanges rigidly connected thereto, made of a steel plate with an antifriction layer, in which the plain (i.e. not yet flanged) half bearing and a pair of flanges are produced and worked separately, and subsequently the two flanges are fixed, in the correct position, onto the half bearing by a welding operation carried out by projection or by condenser discharge. The preparation and working of the thus separate components results in being very economical owing both to the reduction of the operational costs and to a considerable reduction of the cost of the necessary equipment, and the production times are remarkably reduced. The welding step requires very short times and, by the suitable choice of the process used for the welding operation, no deterioration of the antifriction layer applied to the support steel plate occurs, nor any deformation of the plate itself, so that no further working on the finished piece is required.

  • Patent number: 4386458
Abstract: Residual favorable stresses are induced in a zone of stress concentration in a coupling and connection joint mechanism of a drill collar or drilling tool, for example. The residual favorable stress is created by tensily stressing the material within elastic limits, relieving the stress in the zone by heating the material therein into a nonstressed plastic or liquid state, and releasing the tensile stress maintained in an area adjacent the zone. The residual force of elasticity in the area adjacent the zone applies the favorable residual stress in the zone. Preferably, the favorable residual stress is a compressive stress to resist fatigue failures from tension-induced cracks. The extent and depth of penetration of the favorable residual stress in the zone is controlled and is substantially greater than that available from mechanical cold-working surface-hardening techniques.
