Publication number: 20140145453Abstract: The instant disclosure provides a push latch having a pivotally mounted blocking hammer including a head with a lever arm extending away from the head to a counter-weight. Under normal operating conditions, the hammer is held in an inert/balanced condition. Under such normal conditions, a portion of the hammer head may be in periodic contact with a resin of tacky character defining a bumper to aid in dampening vibration. Upon the occurrence of a high impact force, the rotational force provided by the counterweight is sufficient to cause the hammer to rotate into blocking relation relative to the latching mechanism so as to prevent unlatching. In the rotated condition, the counterweight may be in contact with an optional resin of tacky character defining a bumper to reduce rebound action.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2012Publication date: May 29, 2014Applicant: ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS INC.Inventors: Miao Zhang, Toby Berry, JR., Daniel Calby

Patent number: 4824151Abstract: A door lock comprising a block having a slot into which a locking arm moves when the door is shut. A pivot arm is resiliently biassed to extend into the slot and, a separate locking element is resiliently biassed to slidably extend into the slot. While a rotatable element is resiliently biassed to rotate clockwise to bring a roller directly under the locking element, the pivot arm abuts the roller and is itself resiliently biassed to prevent the roller from reaching a position fully under the locking element. Entry of the locking arm into the slot depresses the pivot arm forcing the locking element downward to permit full entry of the locking arm into the slot. As the locking element descends, the roller is urged counter-clockwise and the locking element engages a channel in the locking arm. The depressed pivot arm will not abut the roller at this point thereby allowing it to reach a position fully under the locking element which locks the locking element in the locking arm channel.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1986Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Assignee: Taylor Lock Company Ltd.Inventor: Andrew M. Patent number: 4487439Abstract: Shearing motion between first and second parts of an electromagnetic lock for maintaining a door shut are translated into a force tending to lift the second part away from the first part of the energized lock, and the shearing motion is countered by countering the latter force with the magnetic attraction between the first and second parts of the energized electromagnetic lock. The mechanical friction between the mutually attracted first and second lock parts is added to the full holding force between these parts, so that the holding power of the lock considerably exceeds the holding power generated by the magnetic field between the first and second parts alone.Type: GrantFiled: October 27, 1981Date of Patent: December 11, 1984Assignee: Dynametric, Inc.Inventor: William C.
