  • Patent number: 6832808
Abstract: A cargo trailer having thin side walls mounted to top and bottom side rails wherein the thin walls consist of a plurality of adjacent overlapping outer plates, a plurality of regularly spaced thin posts and a plurality of thin liner panels between and overlapping the posts. The thin posts are reduced in thickness and inwardly offset opposite the top and bottom side rails and are positioned inside those rails. The offset portion of the posts moves the major portions of the posts outwardly to be coplanar with the exteriors of the top and bottom side rails and increases the interior width of the trailer. A stress plate may be provided along lower portions of the posts. The outer plates, posts and liner panels are fastened together and to the top and bottom rails.

  • Publication number: 20040232728
Abstract: A sidewall for a semi-trailer is provided. The sidewall includes composite side panels, a baserail and a splicing member. The panels are formed of inner and outer skins and a core member therebetween. An upper portion of the panels is secured to a top rail of the semi-trailer. A lower portion of the baserail is secured to a bottom rail of the semi-trailer. The upper portion of the baserail and the lower portion of the panels overlap such that an outer surface of the baserail is positioned against the inner skin of the panels. The upper portion of the baserail and the lower portion of the panels are secured together by the splicing member which is positioned against the outer skin of the panels, and the outer surface of the baserail. The splicing member also supports the panels at the bottom end thereof.

  • Patent number: 6814397
Abstract: A bed assembly for a motor vehicle includes a floor pan that defines a bed surface extending between longitudinal sides. Each of the longitudinal sides includes a side support surface spaced from and parallel to the bed surface. The bed assembly also includes a sidewall panel having a lower end defining a base surface disposed adjacent to and supported by the side support surface. In addition, the bed assembly includes a retention member extending along a portion of one of the longitudinal sides to secure the base surface to the side support surface. The retention member maintains the sidewall panel in abutting relation to the floor pan.

  • Patent number: 6793273
Abstract: In one embodiment, a bulkhead extension for a DOT rated bulkhead installed on a flatbed vehicle includes a pair of wings attached one to each side of the bulkhead. The bulkhead extension also includes a top bar coinciding with the top panel of the bulkhead and connected between the pair of wings to provide a unitary bulkhead extension. The bulkhead extension widens the bulkhead to accommodate an extendable/retractable flexible cover system mounted on the bed of the vehicle. In another embodiment, the extension apparatus is mounted inboard of the vertical legs of the front bow-shaped beam of the cover system. In this embodiment, the extension apparatus can include a pair of wings or swing flaps that are pivotably mounted to the vertical legs so that the wings can be pivoted between an outboard position and an inboard operative position.

  • Publication number: 20040113458
Abstract: A wall structure of a trailer box (10) is constructed from a plurality of panels (36, 38, 40) which are welded together where their edges meet. The panels (36, 38, 40) are each extrusions and each includes thin side skins (42, 44) and thin webs (46, 48, 50). The edge regions that are connected together include thickened portions that dissipate a substantial amount of the heat provided by the welds (56, 58). A plurality of panels (36, 38, 40) are welded together to form a large wall structure (WS). This wall structure (WS) is then reconfigured by a roll-forming machine (FIGS. 8-10) to provide a box (10) having a longitudinally straight and laterally curved configuration. Laterally considered, the box (10) has a concave inner side and a convex outer side. This shape of the box provides the box with both sidewalls and a bottom. The overall construction of the trailer box is lightweight and quite strong and facilitates construction of the truck/trailer box.
