The retaining surface contacts the first cam surface and urges the fuel door toward the closed position when the fuel door is at the closed position, and contacts the second cam surface and urges the fuel door toward the open position when the fuel door is at the open position.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 4, 2002Publication date: September 19, 2002Inventor: Horst Leitner

Publication number: 20020113455Abstract: A removable cover for the exterior surface of an automotive vehicle's fuel door. The cover has a securing means, such as one or more straps or fasteners, and a center portion, such as a fabric. Preferably, the cover is secured using a substantially circumferential elastic strap secured within one or more channels formed by folding and sewing the edges of the cover. The cover is designed to substantially cover the outwardly exposed exterior coated surface of the fuel door while avoiding interference with the operation of the fuel door hinges and locks. The cover is further suitable for displaying a message, symbol, logo or other visual display at a noticeable and highly visible location on the vehicle.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2001Publication date: August 22, 2002Inventor: Jesse Mungia

Patent number: 6435233Abstract: An inlet filler pipe comprises a pipe main body having a fuel passage for fueling fuel through an inlet into a fuel tank, and a flange formed on the pipe main body, for attachment to an outer wheel housing. A reinforcing element comprising a plurality of first ribs and second ribs arranged so as to surround the pipe main body is formed on the flange. The portion along the outer periphery of the pipe main body between first ribs and second ribs serves as a fragile portion, ensuring breaks at a load over a predetermined level.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 2001Date of Patent: August 20, 2002Assignee: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd.Inventors: Natsushi Miura, Hisatsugu Goto, Tomokazu Hori

Patent number: 6431228Abstract: An apparatus for use with a filler neck of a vehicle includes a filler neck access door adapted to be coupled to a side wall of the vehicle, a filler neck closure that is adapted to be coupled to an open mouth of the filler neck to close the open mouth and includes a first seal configured to block fuel and fuel vapor from flowing from the filler neck to atmosphere, and a cover configured to cover the filler neck closure upon closure of the filler neck access door. The cover includes a second seal and a seal support coupled to the second seal and the filler neck access door. The seal support yieldably biases the second seal into engagement with the filler neck closure upon closure of the filler neck access door.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 2001Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Stant Manufacturing Inc.Inventors: Dean C. Patent number: 6352295Abstract: There is described an improved fuel door assembly and methods for assembling same. In one preferred example the fuel door assembly comprises a housing that defines an axis of rotation and has a moveable retaining surface that is biased toward the axis of rotation, and a fuel door received in the housing and rotatable about the axis of rotation between a closed position and an open position. The fuel door has a first cam surface and a second cam surface. The retaining surface contacts the first cam surface and urges the fuel door toward the closed position when the fuel door is at the closed position, and contacts the second cam surface and urges the fuel door toward the open position when the fuel door is at the open position.Type: GrantFiled: April 24, 2000Date of Patent: March 5, 2002Assignee: American Moto Products, Inc.Inventor: Horst Leitner

Publication number: 20020021017Abstract: A filler neck closure assembly (30) includes a closure apparatus (32) formed to include a pump nozzle-receiving opening (36) and adapted to be mounted on an open mouth of a filler neck 24. A cover 40, pivotally mounted to the closure apparatus (32), is movable between a first position covering the nozzle-receiving opening (36) to seal the filler neck (24) and a second position uncovering the nozzle-receiving opening (36) to allow access thereto. An overcenter leaf spring (42) normally biases the cover (40) toward its first closed position. A tether (94) coupled to the cover (40) has its other end (96) coupled to a filler neck access door (90) so that as the access door (90) is moved from a closed position blocking access to the filler neck (24) to an open position unblocking access to the filler neck (24), the cover (40) is moved from the first position covering the nozzle-receiving opening (36) to the second position uncovering the nozzle-receiving opening (36).Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2001Publication date: February 21, 2002Inventor: Dean C. Publication number: 20020008402Abstract: A system is provided in order to automatically close a filler inlet compartment lid of a car when the lid is in an unintended open position. When predefined signals which are considered to indicate the termination of a refueling operation occur, the system activates a filler inlet compartment lid closing mechanism so that the filler inlet compartment lid is automatically closed and locked. This can take place when the filler inlet compartment lid is completely open or when the lid is in an only slightly lifted intermediate position. The filler inlet compartment lid may reach such a slightly lifted intermediate position, for example, in a drive-through car wash when triggered by the pressure of the car wash brushes.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 11, 2001Publication date: January 24, 2002Applicant: Bayerische Motoren Werke AktiengesellschaftInventors: Patrick Moll, Heiko Goehr

Publication number: 20010054829Abstract: In a cap device, a long, flexible coupling member is coupled at one end to a cap for opening and closing an inlet, and it is slidably mounted at the other end to a guide member located near the inlet. A rotary ring is rotatably mounted around the cap, and the coupling member is coupled to a part of the rotary ring at one end thereof. Slanted blocks for removing foreign materials are provided on a portion of the rotary ring which slides with respect to the circumferential outer surface of the cap. A slide support member formed another end of the coupling member is guided by a guide member disposed on the back side of the oil filler lid. The guide member guides the slide support member in such a direction that the slide support member slides apart from a hinge.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 26, 2001Publication date: December 27, 2001Applicant: TOYODA GOSEI CO., LTD.Inventors: Hiroyuki Hagano, Masayuki Nakagawa
