Each arm has a respective internal gear secured to it, and the gears are coaxial and the arms can rotate mutually about a pivot. An external gear is slidable axially on the pivot for movement into engagement with one or the other or both of the internal gears to lock them together. The improvement of the invention is an arrangement for shifting the external gear axially into and out of engagement with the internal gears. The arrangement has a plurality of operation elements secured on and extending axially from the external gear, and an axially acting cam engaging the operation elements for shifting them and the external gear axially of the pivot. The cam may be a rotary cam or a linearly slidable cam.

Abstract: The hinge mechanism for supporting the back part of a vehicle seat for pivotal movement relative to a base part has first and second hinge arms secured respectively to the back part and base part and interconnected by an eccentric device. The eccentric device is rotatably supported on the first hinge arm and supports eccentrically a shaft integral with the second hinge arm. Rotation of the eccentric device by a handle moves the shaft laterally, and two sets of teeth secured respectively to the hinge arms are thereby moved into or out of mesh. A cam acting between the hinge arms maintains the teeth out of mesh while the back part is in a forward tilted position.

  • Patent number: 4184714
Abstract: The invention concerns a seat hinge comprising a first flange integral with the sitting portion carrying a first toothed sector having axis A, a second flange integral with the seat back carrying a second toothed sector having axis B adapted to coact vertically with the first sector and a handle-rotary cam-bearing surface assembly for controlling the vertical movements of the flange. The first flange carries a third toothed sector having axis A diametrically opposed to the first sector and open likewise upwards, and the second flange carries another toothed sector having axis B diametrically opposed to the second sector, likewise open downwards, and adapted to coact with the third sector at the same time as the second sector coacts with the first sector. Preferred application: front vehicle seats.

  • Patent number: 3966253
Abstract: A pair of hinge fittings is mounted at opposite lateral sides of the seat. Each fitting includes a first strap that is fixedly connected with the seat member and a second strap that is fixedly connected with the back member. A pivot connects the straps of each for relative pivotal movement. One strap of each fitting carries an arcuate gear segment and the other strap carries an engaging member which is permanently biased into engagement with the respective gear segment by a biasing spring. A control arrangement is provided which permits the engaging member to be moved out of contact with the respective gear segments. This control arrangement includes on each fitting a pivotal first arm that can be moved into and out of engagement with the respective engaging member and, when it is in such engagement, prevents the engaging member from moving out of engagement with the gear segment.
