  • Publication number: 20120280559
Abstract: A preset recessed casing block for retaining a cutter bit is provided that can be mass-produced and easily installed in the casing of a core barrel. The block has a size and shape that provides for quick and easy insertion and welding into a casing. The block has a cavity that receives and retains a cutter bit while allowing for the removal or extraction of the cutter bit when the bit becomes worn or broken. Because the block is manufactured to fit inside the casing, wear on the block is minimized and it's lifetime extended. The cavity in the block and the shape of the block itself may have different, preset angles and pitches, to allow for the same size block to be placed in a variety of locations around the casing, thereby enabling the manufacturer to produce a variable, raking pattern of the cutter bits for improved annulus cutting.

Abstract: A core breaker positioned between cutting drums on a mining machine that includes a generally circular support member, and a beveled blade portion on the radial outward surface of the support member. The beveled blade portion includes a plurality of wedge-shaped portions and a plurality of serrated portions. Each wedge-shaped portion is connected to an adjacent wedge-shaped portion through a mediate serrated portion. Both the wedge-shaped portions and the serrated portions are generally beveled. The wedge-shaped portions and serrated portions maintain curvatures, giving the blade portion a generally undulated appearance. The blade portion has two faces, and can be beveled on a single face. Alternatively, the blade portion can be beveled on each face. The beveled surfaces can be substantially symmetrical or asymmetrical from a view in the radial direction of the generally circular support member.

  • Patent number: 6386641
Abstract: A design is disclosed for promoting the formation of weld between a first member and a second member whereby a fin is introduced at the outer corner portion of the first member to minimize the creation of defects such as runout or rollover. While such a design is applicable to any industrial welding operation, this design is of particular interest for welding bases or bit blocks holding cutting bits onto rotatable drums, wheels or chains used in construction or mining operations.

  • Patent number: 6382732
Abstract: A cutter head is rotationally drivably mounted on a front portion of a tunnel excavating machine body, a plurality of cutter spokes are provided radially on the cutter head, a plurality of mounting holes are formed in a front surface portion of each of the cutter spokes, a valve plate is turnably mounted and has through-holes formed in correspondence with the mounting holes, relay bits are mounted movably to the through-holes and the mounting holes and rearwardly withdrawably, the relay bit can be fixed by bolts at a position at which the relay bit protrudes from the front surface portion of the cutter spoke, and when the relay bit is withdrawn rearward from the mounting hole, the valve plate is turned to close the mounting hole, whereafter the relay bit is detached and can be replaced.

  • Patent number: 6343842
Abstract: The present invention provides a roller bit for tunnel-driving machines. Pursuant to the invention, a cutting ring has at least two or more segments. Accordingly, it is possible to renew the cutting ring itself or different parts of the cutting ring segment by segment, without the previously required dismantling and installation of a complete roller bit from a drill head and associated expenses of transporting. A total driving time is thus reduced because of shorter repair times. The segments of the cutting ring are disposed in a fixed position preferably by means of profiled guides on the base roller body and connected with the base roller body by means of segment holding devices which have a screw thread, and/or by means of threaded rings.

  • Patent number: 6341823
Abstract: A rotatable cutting tool for earth displacement equipment for maximizing penetration into hard rock during mining, trenching, drilling, or boring operations. The bit penetrator pocket protector for earth displacement equipment includes a body which defines an upper bit end and a lower shank end. The upper bit end defines a bit insert opening configured to detachably accept a penetrator bit tip. The lower shank end is configured to be securable to a penetrator holder that is welded to an implement of earth working equipment such as the chain excavator or a rotatable drum, or the like. A flange, or pocket protector, is defined between the upper and lower ends in order to provide protection for the bit penetrator lower end and a holder in which it is received by minimizing rock and earth fines from contacting and building up between the holder and bit penetrator.

  • Patent number: 6315365
Abstract: In a driving or mining machine including cutter rolls or drums which are mounted for rotation on a cantilever arm pivotable in the vertical direction, bearings and/or gears are arranged in the axial direction of the cutter rolls or drums between parts of the rolls or drums. The bearings and/or gears are connected with the cantilever arm or an actuating means provided in the cantilever arm. At least one stationary cutter bit is arranged on the cantilever arm in the region of the bearings and/or gears between neighboring parts of the rolls or drums in a plane through which the axis of the cantilever arm passes. The cutter bit has at least two cutting edges, a first cutting edge being provided substantially tangential to the enveloping curve of the rotating bits in the direction of the axis of the cantilever arm and a second cutting edge being provided so as to enclose an angle with the first cutting edge.
