  • Patent number: 5344506
Abstract: A shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator predeformed in compression actuates a cable cutter mechanism. A cable or other item to be cut is placed between an anvil and a movable blade affixed to the SMA element. The SMA element is heated by an electrical resistance heater to cause it to return to its undeformed elongated state, thereby moving the blade against the anvil to compress and sever the cable or other item. Ones of the shape memory alloy actuator have a plurality of parallelly arranged SMA elements, every other one of which is predeformed in compression and intermediate ones of which are predeformed in tension. The elements are coupled end-to-end so that, when they are heated to cause them to return to their undeformed states, their respective elongations and shrinkages combine at the output to produce an actuation that is the cumulation in the same direction of the changes of all the elements. The plurality of elements may be in a side-by-side or concentric arrangement.

  • Patent number: 5301429
Abstract: A powered tool removes moldings or other mounted item without imparting damage to the surface being worked upon. The tool has a blade affixed to a handle. The handle and blade are interdigitated so as to form a flat surface along the bottom of the tool. This smooth, flat surface allows the tool to be deployed upon the surface and the blade then slid underneath the molding, such that, by a pneumatic force or other power supplied thereto, the tool easily lifts the molding away from the surface. The handle of the tool has a gripping portion and blade-engaging portion, such that the tool can be comfortably gripped to effect the removal of the molding. The damage to the surface is eliminated when using the present tool, in part, by the formation of the blade of plastic.

  • Patent number: 4829673
Abstract: A self-actuated woodworking tool [T] for one-handed reciprocating operation has a chambered haft [1] and a tool shank [4] carried captively axially within the haft in slidable, reciprocal relationship. A shank portion [5] extending forwardly from the haft has a cutting edge [6]. A haft ferrule [11] precisely orients the shank and so also the cutting edge angularly with respect to the haft. The haft cross-section permits the user to know by tactile feedback the angular orientation of the haft and thus also the cutting edge. A guide [10] carried by the shank within the chamber cooperates with the ferrule and provides low-friction sliding interengagement between the tool shank and walls of the chamber without radial displacement from the axis. • Patent number: 4627166
Abstract: A device is provided which can be used to remove washers from bolts in an efficient, fast and safe manner. The device is comprised of a removable blade assembly disposed in a handle device. The blade assembly has an opening permitting the insertion of the bolt such that when the bolt is fully inserted into the blade assembly, the washer is in contact with a plurality of substantially radially disposed blades. The device itself is provided with a handle, in one embodiment knurled, so that it may be held in a persons hand. After the bolt is inserted into the device, the bolt head is tapped using a striking device, such as a hammer. The force of the impact causes the blades to be driven into the washer, splitting the washer into several arc-shaped pieces and separating them from the bolt. The resulting pieces fall away from the bolt when the bolt is removed from the device, or at least then may be very easily removed from the bolt.

  • Patent number: 4466851
Abstract: A pneumatic impact tool has a tubular housing with an impact head secured in and extending outwardly from one end of the housing and a valve secured within the housing but spaced from the impact head so that a piston chamber is formed within the housing. The valve has an inlet port adapted to be connected to a source of pressurized fluid and two outlet ports for the alternate release, respectively, of pressurized fluid. One outlet port opens directly into the piston chamber while the other is connected by a passage to the piston chamber immediately adjacent the impact head. At least one exhaust port is provided through the housing for exhausting pressurized fluid from the piston chamber when the piston reaches the end of its travel in each direction of its stroke. The housing is adapted to be connected to a source of pressurized fluid so that pressurized fluid enters the inlet port of the valve.

  • Patent number: 4458416
Abstract: A vibration damped portable impact tool comprising a pneumatically powered reciprocating mechanism to which a chisel is connected. In the disclosed tool the chisel is rigidly connected to the piston of the reciprocating mechanism so as to move conjointly therewith. The drive mechanism is arranged in a previously known manner to absorb its own acceleration forces whereby the only vibration forces acting on the tool derive from the chisel in its contact with the work piece. By adapting the spring constant relating to bending of the chisel to the entire mass of the tool such that the resonance frequency of that system is lower than the impact frequency, the vibration forces arising at the working end of the chisel are not transmitted to the tool housing.

Abstract: A power hoe includes a power source, two substantially planar hoe blades positioned in apposition to one another and power connecting structure to synchronizingly reciprocate the blades in sliding engagement relative to each other. The sliding engagement causes the blades to be self-cleaning. Orientation of the tapered end of each hoe blade perpendicular to the direction of reciprocation effects a ground penetrating action of the hoe blades.

  • Patent number: 4359102
Abstract: A bulldozer having a transversely elongate cutter blade closely spaced from the bottom edge of the mold board is disclosed. The cutter blade is mounted for reciprocal motion in forward and aft directions relative to the mold board. Unidirectional force impulses are applied to the cutter blade in a forward direction to drive the blade intermittently forward without aft motion. Preferably, the unidirectional force impulses are applied by first and second matched force transmitting beams. Each beam has two divergent approximately straight legs that meet at a juncture to form an acute, approximately 90.degree. angle, a node at the juncture, an input anti-node at the end of one leg, and an output anti-node at the end of the other leg at the input frequency. A source of vibrations at or near the resonant frequency is coupled to the input anti-node and the output anti-node is disposed in spaced aft relationship from the cutter blade within striking distance thereof.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a variable stroke, impact device comprising a rotating cam impeller which includes an elongated first end portion adaptable for attachment to a rotary drive source and further includes a curved cam surface formed on a second end portion. The rotating cam surface interacts with a curved end portion of an impact tool to reciprocate a wedge-shaped portion of the tool into contact with a work surface. The length of the stroke and the reciprocating speed as well as the impact force are directly related to the force exerted by the operator in pressing the impact device against the work surface.

  • Patent number: 4300287
Abstract: A tool for use in removing the outer sheet metal skin of an automobile door. The tool includes an elongated body having a generally longitudinal axis. A shank is located at one end of the body for connection to a reciprocating apparatus such as an air hammer. A cutting portion is located at the opposite end of the elongated body. The cutting portion of the tool includes a somewhat flattened area extending from the end of the tool. A pair of fingers are located at the cutting end of the tool and project outwardly from the flattened area side of the body. The fingers extend generally at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the body and are spaced apart a sufficient distance to straddle the outer edge of an automobile door to guide the tool during cutting. A narrow cutting tooth is formed on the flattened area of the cutting portion of the tool and is positioned to engage the edge of the automobile door when the fingers are straddling the edge.
