Abstract: Devices and methods for removing a spinal disc are provided herein. Discectomy instruments are disclosed that can remove a spinal disc in a single-pass, i.e., without repeatedly inserting and removing the instrument from a patient. In an exemplary embodiment, the discectomy instrument includes a distal housing, at least one cutting blade, and a handle. When the distal housing is positioned adjacent to a spinal disc, a handle can be actuated to advance the cutting blade along a substantially arc-shaped path through the disc. In certain aspects, the path of the blade can correspond to the anatomy of the disc and to the approach used to access the spine. A second cutting blade can be advanced through the disc and can intersect with the arc-shaped path, forming a complete cut. The cut disc can be received in the distal housing and removed from the patient.

An outer ring including downwardly projecting pins is secured to the cut surface of a previously sliced bagel half. A cutting disc having an upwardly projecting handle and downwardly projecting cutting blades is rotatable within the outer ring, which out ring serves as a guide and as a bearing. By turning the cutting disc while maintaining the bagel and the outer ring stationary, a circular trough will be cut in the dough of the bagel half by the cutting blades. In an antomatic version of the apparatus, a flat, upwardly projecting screw is mounted in a base plate and a bagel half is secured by base plate mounted pins about the flat screw. A cutting disc is provided with a slot to receive the flat screw in a manner to automatically rotate the cutting disc relative to the bagel when the cutting disc is axially moved toward the base plate.

Abstract: A pipe saddle for providing a reliable connection to a pipe. The present invention uses a barb seal which embeds within the surface of the pipe to lock the pipe saddle in place and prevent leakage. The barb seal is formed from the material of the pipe saddle so that no deterioration occurs. The barb seal has an oval shape to provide better sealing capabilities. T-bolt connectors allow the device to be individually tightened on each side of the pipe while allowing the body portions of the saddle to be pivotally opened yet maintained as a single unit to allow easy implementation.

Abstract: A cutting tool assembly of the type including a pilot holder and a cutter blade received in a transverse through slot in the pilot holder. The cutter blade is mounted in the transverse slot in the pilot holder in a manner to allow ready replacement of the pilot blade and in a manner to allow the cutter blade to self-align with respect to the central axis of the pilot holder to minimize the stress loading in the cutter blade and minimize blade breakage. In one embodiment, the cutter blade is mounted in the pilot holder by a cartridge which is received in a threaded bore in the pilot portion of the pilot holder and which includes a spring biased pin projecting upwardly into the transverse slot in the pilot holder. In another embodiment, the cutter blade is mounted in the transverse slot in the pilot holder by a pin and slot connection provided by a slot in the blade and a pin passing through the pilot holder.

  • Patent number: 4807623
Abstract: An ophthalmic device includes a base, a suction ring connected to the base to secure the device to the eye of a patient, and a support piece carrying a pair of securely ganged cutting blades having cutting edges oriented at an angle with respect to one another. The support piece can be raised and lowered with respect to the eye surface, and rotated around the base to simultaneously form two incisions along a path on the eye. The device includes a mechanism for progressively advancing the two cutting blades together in the support piece, while maintaining a constant angular cutting edge relative orientation, to a position in which the cutting points of the two cutting blades are touching, and can thus be used to form an annular wedge-like cut of eye tissue in the treatment of refractive errors. In alternative embodiments, laser or electrosurgical knives may be used instead of cutting blades.

  • Patent number: 4645390
Abstract: The rotary cutting tool is used for making holes in walls of thermoplastic materials, e.g. fuel tanks produced by the blowing process. Cutting blades pointing roughly in the axial direction are placed on the free end face of a circular, rotary tool member and said cutting blade score and displace, instead of cutting the material. The cutting blades are arranged at a drawing angle to the axial direction and slope to the inside or outside, depending on whether a burr is or is not required on the opening edge. A holding device in the form of a mandrel or pin ensures that the cut out circular disk does not drop into the container. Thus, a cut is made, which is suitable for further processing by welding on connections or fitting seals and produces no chips and waste which could fall into the container.

Abstract: A tool is described for facilitating the cutting of printed circuit board wires necessitated by changes in the circuit design or the occurrence of electrical faults. The tool is particularly useful with circuit boards having high density wiring, where it virtually eliminates damage to printed wires adjacent to those being severed. Comprised of a guide pin centrally disposed with respect to an annular cutting edge, the tool uses the former for registration with the component and via holes in the circuit board, and the latter, to sever the printed wires from the electrically conductive pads surrounding the holes. The depth of the cut is carefully controlled by the tool and may be chosen to eliminate electrical faults lying below the surface in a multilayer board.
