Means For Cutting Elongate, Strand-encircling Sheath Patents (Class 30/90.1)
  • Publication number: 20080210058
Abstract: A stripper tool is provided for cutting an outer sheath of an electrical cable. Inside the sheath is parallel spaced apart insulation covered wires and a core member containing an uncovered ground wire between the insulation covered wires. The sheath has spaced apart curved sides conforming to the covered wires. The tool has spaced apart first and second jaw members adapted to be pressed together. The jaw members have cutting edges that receive a portion of the cable along its length. The cutting edges define an opening configured to cut the sheath and the core without significantly cutting the insulation on the wires or the unsheathed ground wire when the jaw members are pressed together to form the opening. The portion of the sheath is then removed in one continuous process.

Abstract: A cable restraint/deployment mechanism is disclosed for deploying an object in space from a spacecraft. To deploy the object, the cable restraint/deployment mechanism cuts a cable attached to the spacecraft and the object. For example, a spacecraft may include a solar panel array that is restrained by the spacecraft in a stowed form through the use of a wire rope cable. The cable may be affixed at one end to a deployable object. The other end of the cable is affixed to the spacecraft through a cutting mechanism, such as a pyrotechnically actuated cutting device. The cutting mechanism cuts the cable at a swaged sleeve of the cable. The swaged sleeve of the cable substantially prevents splaying of the cable and cutting debris.

Next, the screw at the blade body hole is adjusted to control the cutting depth of the blade body so as to force the blade to cut into the outer sheath of the cable. Then the inner insulation layer and the outer sheath can be cut.

Abstract: Apparatus for stripping a coating from a coated optical fiber. The apparatus has a pair of opposed blade holders, one end of each blade holder being adapted to releasably receive and retain a blade. The opposed ends of the blade holders are joined with a flexible member. The opposed blade holders are movable from an open position to a closed position. In the closed position edges of the blades are in a parallel spaced apart position, spaced to grip a coated optical fiber between the plastic blades. The plastic blades are selected and positioned to grip and to effect cracking of the coating while minimizing damage to the optical fiber when a coated optical fiber is placed and moved between the closed blades.

Abstract: A tool for use in cutting cable, preferably ACSR cable, includes first and second blades having cutting configurations. The first and second blades are pivotally connected and a handle are attached to each blade. Movement of the handles rotates the blades about the pivot point. Cable positioned between the cutting configurations is systematically cut by the cutting configurations as the blades are rotated toward each other. Each cutting configuration includes first and second sharp edges and a blunt edge positioned therebetween which defines a concave recess. The first and second sharp edges are used to cut the aluminum strands surrounding the steel cable. During the cutting of the aluminum strands, the steel portion of the cable is urged into the concave recess defined by the blunt edges. The steel cable is then sheared using the blunt edges.

  • Patent number: 6691403
Abstract: The present invention is a hand-held stripping tool. The tool is adapted for cutting an outer sheath of a first electrical cable. Inside the sheath is parallel spaced apart insulation covered wires and a core member containing an uncovered ground wire between the insulation covered wires. The sheath has spaced apart curved sides conforming to the covered wires. The tool has spaced apart first and second jaw members adapted to be pressed together. The jaw members have cutting edges that receive a portion of the first cable along its length. The cutting edges define an opening configured to cut the sheath and the core without significantly cutting the insulation on the wires or the unsheathed ground wire when the jaw members are pressed together to form the opening. The portion of the sheath is then removed in one continuous process.

Abstract: A fiber optic cable stripping and measuring apparatus that includes a mounting base having a template clamp connected thereto, the template clamp securing an optical component connected to the fiber optic cable. The apparatus further includes a fiber clamp connected to mounting base for securing a first portion of the fiber optic cable. A pair of fiber take up mandrels are provided adjacent to the fiber clamp for winding excess fiber optic cable, if excess cable is desired. The apparatus also includes a fiber stripper, spaced from take up mandrels, for scoring a buffer layer of the fiber optic cable. The fiber stripper enables the buffer layer of a portion of the fiber optic cable to be removed to expose optical fiber within the fiber optic cable. The apparatus further includes a cylindrical marking mandrel spaced from the fiber stripper and having a circumference that exceeds the minimum bend radius of the fiber optic cable.

Abstract: The present invention is a cable stripping tool for removing an outer protective jacket of a cable. The cable stripping tool is used to remove a pre-defined amount of the jacket in one rotation of the cable stripping tool. The cable stripping tool allows the rotation of the cable stripping tool by hand during jacket removal in tight areas, where other stripping tools are too difficult to use. The cable stripping tool includes a main body and a cutting blade. The main body includes a blade half and a clamping half. The main body is preferably made from a plastic material to lower production cost, but can be made from many other types of materials. The blade half and clamping half are hinged together by a hinge pin. An inside surface of each half together form a cable receiving area between each other to receive the cable, when the halves are mated and closed.
