  • Patent number: 8944524
Abstract: A locking wheel useful for wheels on small vehicles. The locking wheel fits over a shaft and has a bore for receiving the end of the shaft. An outer member is connected to and spaced from the hub. A finger is adjacent to the bore and has a protrusion that extends into the bore. The finger is resilient and movable between a first and second position. The first position has the protrusion protruding into the bore and the second position has the protrusion outside of the bore with the finger being bent radially outward. The shaft has a notch or hole that receives the finger's protrusion. A locking device may selectively be placed between the outer member and the hub to prevent the finger from moving into its second position, thereby locking the hub onto the shaft.

  • Publication number: 20140035352
Abstract: The apparatus and system described is directed to securing a wheel to an axel without the use of separate tools or devices. The present invention allows for securing the wheel to the axel through the use of a specialized locking mechanism and wheel bearing. When mated, these two elements allow for a wheel that does not require user access to a central hub in order to replace the wheel. Thus, the apparatus and device provide for wheel geometries that take advantage of lack of a hub. For example, the present invention allows for wheel designs that enable a wider range of performance characteristics than offered by prior art devices.

  • Patent number: 6682152
Abstract: A wheelchair wheel locking system reduces the likelihood that a wheel will inadvertently disengage from the wheelchair. An axle is attached to the wheel and has a protrusion for engaging annular grooves within a wall forming an inner passage through an axle receptor attached to the wheelchair. The axle is inserted in an axial direction into the inner passage and has a first locked position in which the axle is fully engaged with the axle receptor, and a second locked position in which the axle is partially engaged with the axle receptor. If a quick release lock is inadvertently released by, for example, pressing a release button, the protrusion retracts and disengages from a first annular groove within the wall of the axle receptor, the axle may start to move axially relative to the axle receptor to a position in which the wheel will disengage from the wheelchair.

Abstract: An engaging device for disposing a wheel to an axle of a golf cart includes a disk member fixedly connected to the wheel and having a recessed portion defined therein. An oblong hole is defined through the disk member. An actuating plate is movably received in the recessed portion and has a recess defined in a lower edge thereof. A shoulder portion extends inwardly from an inner periphery defining the recess. A lever extends laterally from a side of the actuating plate. A biasing member is disposed to the disk member and biasedly presses the lever downwardly. The axle extends through the wheel, the recess and has an annular groove defined in a periphery thereof so that the shoulder portion is disengagably received therein.

Abstract: A wheel assembly for use with carts employs a sleeve element as an intermediate member between a central axle and both the wheel and the cart body. The sleeve element has an inner recess shaped to receive an end portion of the axle and a first external surface for rotatably engaging within a hole in the cart such that a part of the sleeve element functions as a bearing disposed between the axle and the hole. The sleeve element also has a resilient catch element for retaining it within the hole such that the axle is prevented from moving longitudinally while being free to rotate relative to the cart body. The sleeve element also provides a substantially cylindrical external surface for rotatable mounting of the wheel.

  • Patent number: 5716107
Abstract: A reusable, releasably lockable wheel assembly comprising a wheel having a centrally disposed hub defining an aperture in which is received an axle. A spring having diametrically opposed lugs is disposed on one side of the hub and the lugs extend into the aperture of the hub so that when the axle is inserted into the aperture, the lugs are biased into the groove on the end of the axle to lock the wheel to the axle. The lugs can be forced outwardly by a tool to withdraw the lugs from the groove so that the axle can be unlocked with respect to the wheel for removal of the wheel. In one embodiment, cooperation between a wheel cover and the spring limits slidable movement between the wheel and axle. In another embodiment, cooperation between an end cap on the wheel hub and the spring limits the slidable movement.
