Cover Snap-fits Over Lug Nuts Patents (Class 301/37.373)
  • Patent number: 8469459
Abstract: A system for securing a wheel cover on a vehicle wheel assembly. The system includes first and second bearing surfaces on the wheel cover which are simultaneously engageable by a portion of the vehicle. At least one of the first bearing surface and the second bearing surface is located on a resiliently deflectable portion of the wheel cover. At least one of the first bearing surface and the second bearing surface is also being sloped with respect to an axis along which the wheel cover is applied to the wheel to secure the wheel cover on the wheel assembly, so as to enable slidable engagement between the sloped bearing surface and the portion of the vehicle engaged by the sloped bearing surface. At least one retention surface separate from the sloped surface is engageable with a portion of the vehicle to retain the wheel cover on the wheel assembly.

  • Patent number: 7997663
Abstract: A wheel cover suitable for being mounted on vehicle wheels having an outer surface adapted for facing away from a wheel of a vehicle and an inner surface adapted for facing towards the wheel when mounting the wheel cover. Central fasteners and peripheral fasteners extend from the inner surface towards the wheel of the vehicle. The central fasteners are arranged at bolts of the wheel. Both the central fasteners and the peripheral fasteners are shaped so as to make an exclusively snap-type mounting of the wheel cover on elements of the wheel. A ridge projects from the inner surface of the wheel cover to make abutment with the head of the bolt at the same time the rib or tooth abuts onto the sloped section of the bolt head to stop the insertion movement.

  • Patent number: 7722128
Abstract: A lug nut engaging retention for plastic wheel trim includes a plurality of tubular sockets which project axially from the inner face of the wheel trim. Each socket comprises three concentric arcuate lug nut engaging panels. Two of the panels include lips that snap over a peripheral flange of a lug nut, while the third panel is fixed relative to the wheel trim and serves as a centering guide. A circumscribing ring engages the periphery of the panels adjacent their apical ends to reinforce the radially inwardly directed bias of the lipped panels. Three legs are positioned about the socket center at a radius greater than that of the panels. Each leg includes a pair of axially spaced abutments which engage the ring to limit axial movement of the ring relative to the panels.

  • Patent number: 7387346
Abstract: A wheel cover having collars (1) with elastic tabs (3) for mounting and fixing the collars on the heads of nuts or bolts (2) used to fix the wheel to a vehicle. The tabs (3) have protrusions (4) with a double ramp (5 and 5?), that are used to mount and dismount the collars (1) to the nuts or bolts (2). The collars (3) are retained by locking the protrusions (4) onto an annular projection (14) of the head of the nut or bolt. Independent caps (10) are locked by the protrusions to the collars (1) whereby the caps (10) protect and conceal the screws or heads of the bolts (2) and remain locked while being able to turn freely.

  • Publication number: 20070210640
Abstract: A hub cap for a vehicular wheel. The hub cap includes a body portion and a wheel coupling portion, both made from a non-metallic material. The wheel coupling portion has circumferentially-spaced lug nut engaging members that are axially alignable with lug nuts extending from the wheel. The lug nut engaging members form a substantially arcuate shape, and are resiliently biased so that upon placement of the hub cap onto a wheel, the lug nuts push the lug nut engaging members in a radial direction. Continued contact between the lug nuts and their corresponding engaging members promotes secure connection between the hub cap and wheel. In one embodiment, the body portion and wheel engaging portion is formed from two separate pieces that are subsequently joined, while in another, they are formed from a single unitary structure to define a one-piece construction.

  • Patent number: 7004549
Abstract: An ornamental wheel cover integrally retained on the lug nuts of a vehicle wheel that provides positive positioning of the cover to the lug nuts. The cover is provided with a number of elongated tubular extensions axially projecting therefrom that are each partially slotted to provide a plurality of cantilevered fingers. Each finger has an undercut groove that positively positions the cover to the lug nuts of the wheel. Abstract: A wheel cover snap fastens to stylized lug nuts of a wheel using resilient retainers that are integrally fastened to the wheel cover. The stylized lug nuts correspond and axially extend through apertures in the wheel cover when the wheel cover is assembled to the wheel. The retainers are secured to an inboard face of the wheel cover and correspondingly engage the stylized lug nuts to retain the wheel trim assembly to the wheel such that retainers are not visible when the wheel trim assembly is viewed from a direction normal to the outboard face of the wheel cover. The apertures are sized in relation to annular flanges on the lug nuts and to the resilient tabs of the retainers such that the wheel cover and/or annular flanges of the lug nuts conceal the retainers from view, and thereby provide an uninterrupted chrome appearance.

The supports provide support and prevent over-travel of the legs when the ornamentation is being installed by securing the ring to the lug nuts. The supports include an extension and a cross member. The extension positions the supports with respect to the ring and the cross members are bent and welded to the legs that are disposed adjacent thereto to provide support and prevent the over-travel of the legs as the legs pass over the lug nuts to which they are being secured.
