    Abstract: A light emitting sealed body includes: a housing which stores a discharge gas and is provided with a first opening to which first light is incident along a first optical axis and a second opening from which second light is emitted along a second optical axis; a first window portion which hermetically seals the first opening; a second window portion which hermetically seals the second opening; and a first electrode and a second electrode. The housing is formed of a light shielding material which does not transmit the first light and the second light. An internal space is defined by the housing, the first window portion, and the second window portion and the internal space is filled with the discharge gas. The first opening and the second opening are disposed so that the first optical axis and the second optical axis intersect each other.

    Abstract: An ignition element for use in igniting a high-frequency plasma torch is ungrounded and displaceable. When a tip end of the ignition element is positioned in a location in a gas to be formed into a plasma, which flows under normal pressure, and a high-frequency energy is applied to the above location in the gas flow, the gas is ignited into a high-temperature plasma in a small period of time shorter than 1 second. After the gas has been ignited, the ignition element is immediately retracted out of the location. The ignition element may be in the form of an ignition rod of metal or an ignition tube of quartz or the like. Where the ignition rod is used, it instantaneously contacts the high-temperature plasma upon ignition so that the high-temperature plasma is of high purity consisting only of the component of the gas. The ignition tube may be used for producing a high-temperature plasma of higher purity on and after ignition. The ignition tube is employed while a pressure therein is reduced.

    Abstract: A low cost multimegavolt high current switch that can effectively switch tages in the megavolts range and currents in the order of 200 thousand amperes. Switching is accomplished by the movement of a conductive member from a first electrically isolated position to a second electrically isolated position. During movement along a guided path the conductive member passes through an arc gap, initiating an arc or plasma in the gap to accomplish the switching action. Movement of the conductive member from one position to the other may be accomplished by gravity, pressure, electromotive drive, or other propelling means.

    Abstract: Device for the manual start-up of a plasmotron. The device has a spring biased plunger which constitutes an electrode which selectively bridges the anode and cathode of the plasmotron and creates an arc between the anode and cathode when it is released so as to be retracted by the spring. The device is provided with an automatic lock which secures the plunger in its outer, retracted position and must be released manually to prevent unintended operation of the start-up device.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a discharge lamp which has a discharge vessel provided with an external auxiliary electrode. The lamp also has a bimetal which in the inoperative condition of the lamp causes the external auxiliary electrode to bear against the discharge vessel. According to the invention the auxiliary electrode is connected to an end of only one bimetallic strip and in the operating condition of the lamp the auxiliary electrode is remote for the greater part from the discharge vessel due to the action of the bimetal. Combined with an operating condition of the lamp in which no hindrance is experienced from the auxiliary electrode.

    Abstract: A circuit interrupter which can be used as a high voltage d-c breaker or fault current limiter transfer switch or the like contains a pair of cooperable contacts disposed in an evacuated container. One of the contacts also serves as the cathode of a magnetically modulated vacuum arc discharge device. This cathode is spaced from an anode disposed in the wall of the evacuated housing. The anode is surrounded by a winding which is capable of producing a magnetic field which can increase the impedance of the arc plasma between the cathode and anode in order to decrease the arc current and extinguish the arc. The cooperable contacts within the interrupter serve to carry load current and also serve to create the inital arc which is transferred between the anode and cathode structures.

    Abstract: An electrodeless lamp is excited by high frequency power in a termination fixture having an inner and an outer conductor, the lamp being located in the high field region at the end of the conductors. A source of ultraviolet radiation is located near the lamp and is activated momentarily when the lamp is to be excited. The radiation assists in initiating breakdown and excitation of the fill material in the lamp.
