  • Patent number: 8427079
Abstract: A lighting device (1) comprises a plurality of LEDs (11-14) producing light (21-24) of mutually different colors. The LEDs are driven in switching cycles (63) with a duty cycle controlled supply current of constant magnitude. In each switching cycle, each LED is first switched ON (61) and then switched OFF (62). In a measuring mode, during one switching cycle (63B), all ON phases of all LEDs are briefly interrupted, except for one LED (11), so that a light sensor (70) measures the light from this one LED. This measurement can be used to adapt the duty cycle of this one LED. In the next switching cycle (63C), the interruption of the ON phases is compensated by extending the ON phases of all LEDs except said one LED, the extension having a duration equal to the duration (?D) of the interruption.

Abstract: Applicant has disclosed a method for controlling on and off times for streetlights by synchronizing these intervals to recent local daylight conditions without any human intervention. The preferred method comprises: sensing, via a photocell, when dusk and dawn occurs; and then, timing or counting the dusk and dawn times per 24-hour cycle, recording that dusk and dawn data, calculating the average dusk-to-dawn interval for a plurality of preceding 24-hour cycles; predicting, the next dusk time; and turning on the streetlight for a preselected percentage of the calculated average dusk-to-dawn interval. Future “on” time periods are repeatedly calculated as a percentage of the dark periods determined on one or several immediately prior nights, and so varies with the seasons. Unlike the prior art, Applicant's streetlight control does not require field programming or field inputs from the installer or time knowledge. It also does not require any external or internal precision clock or calendar.

The controller is operable to control a supply of electrical power from the power supply to the light source such that the light source illuminates in accordance with the intensity set by the user. The lighting unit is also operable to optionally report usage information for the lighting unit (e.g., cumulative on time) using the light source to produce a visually undetectable information signal. The controller is further optionally operable to adjust (e.g., increase) the electrical power supplied to the light source when the cumulative on time for the light source corresponds to a point on a lumen depreciation curve indicating a reduction in light source intensity.

Abstract: A 1-wire communication protocol and interface circuitry for communication between a host controller and a LED driver is provided. The 1-wire communication protocol is configured such that both PWM signals and DC current setting commands for programming the LED driver may be transmitted from the host controller to the LED driver via the same 1-wire interface. The 1-wire communication protocol uses the length of the pulses (pulse width), rather than the number of pulses, to distinguish between different modes of communication (PWM signal transmission mode or command pulse transmission mode) and different commands of the same type (specific DC current programming commands, or specific average PWM drive current for the LED, within each transmission mode). Because the same 1-wire interface is used for transmitting both PWM signals and DC current commands, integrated circuits for the host controller and the LED driver do not require an additional wire or pin.

Abstract: A glow-in-the-dark night light for a control device allows the control device to be easily found when the control device is located in a dark space. The night light may be provided on an actuator of the control device and may comprises a glow-in-the-dark material that has a luminance spectrum that decays with time after initial excitation. The night light is illuminated by an electromagnetic-energy-generating element to periodically recharge the glow-in-the-dark material with adequate energy to keep the glow-in-the-dark material visible in low ambient light conditions. The electromagnetic-energy-generating element draws relatively little current, such that the night light may be provided in a battery-powered remote control that has an acceptable battery lifetime.

Abstract: A light-emitting adjustment method and a display device are provided. The display device includes a voltage source, a light-emitting diode array, a pulse width modulator, a current sensor and a light-emitting adjuster. The voltage source provides an operating voltage. The pulse width modulator provides operating pulse signals to multiple light-emitting diodes arranged in column in order. The current sensor senses a plurality of overall current values of the light-emitting diodes at different timings during the light-emitting diodes are sequentially enabled. The light-emitting adjuster computes an operating current value of each of the light-emitting diodes according to the overall current values and performs a compensation operation based on the operating current value to obtain and output a compensation signal.

Abstract: An example controller for a switched mode power supply includes a zero-crossing detector, drive logic, and an on-time extension block. The zero-crossing detector is coupled to generate a first signal prior to a zero-crossing of an input voltage of the power supply. The drive logic is to generate a drive logic output signal in response to a feedback signal, where the drive logic output signal is representative of an initial on-time. The on-time extension block is coupled to the zero-crossing detector and to the drive logic to generate a drive signal in response to the drive logic output signal. The drive signal controls switching of a switch to remove charge from a filter capacitor of the power supply. The drive signal is representative of a total on-time of the switch equal to a sum of the initial on-time and an extended on-time, where the extended on-time is responsive to the first signal.

The dimmable LED lamp includes a bridge rectifier, a toggle detector, a sustain voltage supply circuit, a counter, an LED light source, and an LED lighting driver. The bridge rectifier receives a source alternating current (AC) voltage through a wall switch and provides a rectified direct current (DC) voltage. The toggle detector monitors a toggle action of the wall switch. The sustain voltage supply circuit provides a sustain voltage. The counter receives the sustain voltage for operation. Moreover, the counter stores and provides an counting value that changes when the toggle detector detects the toggle action. The LED lighting driver converts the rectified DC voltage to a constant current to drive the LED light source. The LED lighting driver also provides multi-level dimming to the LED light source according to the counting value.
