Abstract: A fluorescent lamp starter unit determines whether the lighting fixture into which it has been plugged is in a first state (for example, the lamp is off) or is in a second state (for example, the lamp is on). If the fixture is in the first state then the starter unit uses a first method to detect ballast type, whereas if the fixture is in the second state then the starter unit uses a second method to detect ballast type. In one example, the first method involves turning on the power switch of the starter unit at a time after a zero-crossing and then using the periodicity of a transient switch current signal to determine ballast type, whereas the second method involves turning on the power switch at the time of the zero-crossing and then using peak amplitude information of the transient switch current to determine ballast type.

Abstract: Organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices are one of the most promising alternatives to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for flat panel display (FPD) applications. The OLED technique is based on organic semiconductors used either as hole- or electron transporting materials or as an emitter. Working on common problems of performance and life time in OLED preparation, improved charge transport molecules and polymers such as triarylamine- and poly(para-phenylene)-have been developed. Some useful materials include: (1) cyclic triarylamine-derivatives possessing enhanced glass transition temperatures; (2) triarylamine based low molecular mass hole-transport molecules and hole-transport polymers with pendant oxetane groups for processing out of solution and subsequent cross-linking; and (3) fluorenyl-segmented poly(para-phenylene)s with defined electrochemical properties. Provided is a polymer precursor that is useful as a hole transport polymer in OLED and other organic electronic devices.

Abstract: An apparatus to control remote devices or equipment via existing cellular telephone networks. The apparatus receives information from a customer concerning a specific function, which the customer wants to perform at the remote equipment. A Central Control receives this information from the customer and correlates the function to a specific cellular telephone MIN number, which has been pre-programmed in a computer at the Central Control. The MIN number is then sent to a cellular provider. The cellular provider then transmits the MIN number to an antenna, which transmits the MIN number to a remote equipment controller at the remotely located equipment. The remote equipment controller then takes the a part of the MIN and gives these numbers to a PLC at the remote equipment controller. The PLC then memory maps the part of the MIN to a specific function to be carried out by the remote equipment controller. Then the remote equipment controller carriers out specified functions at the remote equipment.
