Motors Electrically Connected In Cascade Or Tandem Patents (Class 318/49)
  • Patent number: 4375047
Abstract: An electric motor having a cage pivotally mounted at one end to a post interior a housing by a first bearing and at its other end by a second bearing between the exterior of the cage and the interior of the housing. A first stator is mounted to the interior of the cage and has an output shaft and first rotor interior thereto. A second rotor is mounted to the exterior of the cage and interior a second stator which is mounted interior the housing. The second stator is driven with a control signal which is a function of the measure reaction torque experienced by the first stator to produce a counter torque to balance the reaction torque. A consistency transmitter mounted on the output shaft produces torque on the first stator as a function of the consistency of the material in which it is rotated.

  • Patent number: 4354144
Abstract: A continuously variable transmissionless drive system providing maximum torque at low speeds. The system is usable in a hybrid vehicle having a prime mover, such as an internal combustion engine, operated at its optimum rpm for efficiency. The prime mover drives a pair of amplidynes which in turn operate a pair of dc motors to produce rotation of the output shaft for driving the wheels of the vehicle via a novel differential drive system which drives the output shafts in which the effective gear ratio may be externally controlled to vary from a very high step down ratio producing very high torque to a one-to-one ratio for driving at a constant speed. Each drive motor is connected to a separate bevel gear in the differential and control of the output shaft speed and torque is obtained by controlling the speed and direction of rotating of the bevel drive gears.

  • Patent number: 4353015
Abstract: An apparatus for changing the relative angles of the output shafts of a multiple-motor electric drive. For this purpose, the appropriate synchronous motor is switched to a phase-shifting frequency changer and its relative shaft (mechanical phase) angle is shifted by varying the frequency. The synchronous motor is then switched back to the operating frequency changer. The phase equality of the output voltages of the two frequency changers is monitored by signals derived from logic elements driving the frequency changers. In normal operation, the phase shifting frequency changer is driven by the same digital frequency generator as the operating frequency changer and is only switched to another frequency generator for phase shifting. Transition from one frequency changer to the other is made without shock.

  • Patent number: 4350936
Abstract: Apparatus and a method for controlling the operation of a fin winding machine. Various motor drives are utilized to regulate the speed of rotation of a heat exchange tube upon which fin is wrapped to regulate the speed of rotation of forming wheels for bending the fin to the appropriate configuration and to regulate the speed of rotation of slitter wheels for perforating the fin prior to bending. Sensing means are provided for determining the length of the fin strip within various segments along a fin route such that the motor speeds are all adjusted to maintain the desired amount of fin strip. Tension means are provided for maintaining constant tension of the fin strip regardless of the length of the fin strip in the appropriate segment. The various sensing means are cascaded such that a change in speed of one motor may affect a change in speed of another motor.

  • Patent number: 4300078
Abstract: The method makes possible experimentation on reduced scale models, more especially in non-stationary operating conditions, of the rotor of rotary electrical machines respecting the physical conditions which ensure in the rotor under test a simultaneous similitude for the electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical phenomena. The contradiction which appears in the reduction of the electromagnetic forces and of the inertial forces is removed by modifying the stator of the reduced scale model so as to produce in the rotor a correct evolution of the rotor frequencies. The method is useful for testing rotors of very high power electrical machines.

  • Patent number: 4289997
Abstract: A drive apparatus has at least two electric motors. There is also a central control common to all motors which lie in series in a closed-circuit energy supply. Each motor has an individual control unit which can be turned on and off from the central control via a control line by an address. Each motor also contains a short-circuit device lying in parallel with its connecting terminals.

  • Patent number: 4288727
Abstract: An arrangement of electric motors which are coupled together both mechanically and electrically comprises series pass elements and current sensing devices in the power circuits of the respective motors, each current sensing device having an output voltage which is proportional to its motor current, and which is applied to a respective linear operational amplifier having an output which controls the equivalent resistance of the series pass element (and thereby the magnitude of motor current). A single reference voltage is applied to all the linear operational amplifiers, so that, for example, if the motors are similar, each will transmit the same torque regardless of any difference in its internal impedance.

  • Patent number: 4222512
Abstract: A rotary drive device for effecting, for example, displacement of a printing roller towards or away from a pressure roller in a printing press, is formed by a direct current or alternating current high speed motor coupled mechanically to a permanent magnet low speed motor. Fast movement is effected with the permanent magnet motor being pulled by the high speed motor, while slow movement with rapid braking is effected, at high torque, with the permanent magnet motor excited and pulling the other motor, to bring the printing roller gently into contact with the pressure roller.
