  • Patent number: 5189357
Abstract: A method and apparatus for improving the performance of polyphase AC machines. The polyphase AC machines are excited both with a fundamental frequency and with an odd harmonic of the fundamental frequency. The fundamental flux wave and the harmonic flux wave will travel at synchronous speed in the air gap. This facilitates redistributing the flux densities in the machine and thereby increasing the total flux per pole in the machine.

  • Patent number: 4736147
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for starting motors by harmonics for synchronous motors, wound-rotor and cage-rotor asynchronous motors started thereby. During the starting period, according to the present invention, the connection of the stator winding is changed so as to create some very strong harmonic fields. The harmonic fields are associated with the rotor windings and are used to improve the starting performance of the motor. The three motors all have large starting torque, small starting current and can be started by direct-on-line. The wound-rotor asynchronous motor has no brushes or, slip rings on the rotor and there is no electric contact thereby increasing the reliablity of starting and running. The running efficiency is superior to the cage-rotor asynchronous motor.

  • Patent number: 4459502
Abstract: A self-cascaded reluctance motor is provided with an axially laminated rotor. The motor includes a stator winding having two sets of terminals and wound such that the number of poles between one set of terminals differs from the number of poles between the other set of terminals by more than two. The rotor includes a plurality of axially disposed conductive sheets and magnetic material laminations which are interleaved within each rotor segment to form groups of magnetic material laminations which lie between two of the conductive sheets. The number of conductive laminations is equal to one half of the total number of stator winding poles or an integral submultiple thereof, while the number of groups of magnetic material laminations is equal to one half of the total number of stator pole pairs or an integral submultiple thereof. Short-circuited coils can be substituted for the conductive sheets to provide better coupling between the two stator component windings and thus more output power.
