Patent number: 6640460Abstract: The present invention encompasses a measuring tape for measuring the torso girth of a user, the tape comprising a separable fastening that, when fastened, creates a loop of tape that extends in use around the user's torso without support from the user's hands, a link co-operable with the tape allowing the circumference of the loop to be adjusted or varied when around the user's torso, and girth indicia co-operable with the link to indicate the circumference of the loop. The link maintains a securing tension on the loop to secure the loop around the torso but allows expansion of the loop when the user expands her torso during said measurement, and resists variation of the loop circumference when the fastening is unfastened after use. In this way, the circumference of the loop can be read by the user after use with reference to the girth indicia A method for measuring the torso girth of a user by means of the present invention is also contemplated.Type: GrantFiled: July 5, 2002Date of Patent: November 4, 2003Assignee: T-Bra LimitedInventors: Daniel Joseph Nunes Nabarro, Alun Wilcox, Timothy Roland Manson, Julian Francis Ralph Swan

Publication number: 20020104230Abstract: The invention is a depth gauge having standard components and improved in that a flexible shaft is mated to the tip. A probe is attached to the shaft. The flexible shaft allows for full angular adjustment for various directional approaches to the hole. The tip of the probe can be formed into a shape that conforms with a mating part through which the hole is measured. The probe is manufactured from a superelastic nickel titanium <<NITINOL>> alloy which has greater flexibility and elasticity than typical spring steels so that it doesn't permanently deform when the flexible shaft is bent. The nickel titanium probe also extends from the tip of the shaft in a direction perpendicular to the tip so it extends straight into the hole being measured even when the guide is off axis. The nickel titanium probe can be attached in several different ways to the depth gauge. For example, a setscrew could be used or a crimp.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 30, 2002Publication date: August 8, 2002Inventor: Patrick White

Patent number: 6427080Abstract: A guide for assisting a health care practitioner in evaluating radiographic images of spines is based on a flexible transparent sheet bearing images thereon which each include an edge representing the periphery of a vertebra and a line inscribed thereon laterally displaced from the edge by a measured distance which represents the maximum thickness of soft tissue allowed in the absence of a cervical spinal injury for each corresponding cervical vertebra. A process for evaluating a radiographic image of a spine involves placing the guide over a lateral radiographic image of a subject spine that is to be evaluated with the edge representing the periphery of a selected vertebra placed in alignment with the radiographic image of the corresponding selected cervical vertebra. The amount of soft tissue appearing in radiographic image is observed in relation to the line and thereby determining whether the amount of soft tissue present exceeds a soft tissue allowance for the specific vertebra.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2000Date of Patent: July 30, 2002Inventor: Richard E. Patent number: 6415525Abstract: A strip of material with at least one start marker and a plurality of rows of object markers designating body parts to be sized, directional markers designating orientation of the strip, size markers and size indicia. The size markers demarcate subranges of body part measurements and are arranged relative to the start marker. Size indicia are arranged between the size markers and designate and are correlated to garment sizes. Stretch characteristics of the garment being sized are accounted for by the use of adjusted size marker positions, a stretch material, or a compression/elasticity correlation graph. A method of sizing compression garments includes the steps of wrapping the measuring article generally around a body part, overlapping the measuring article with itself, reading the garment size indicia from the measuring article, and entering the garment size indicia in a garment order system.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1999Date of Patent: July 9, 2002Assignee: Marlena International, LLCInventor: William Bruce Campbell Watkins

Patent number: 6415199Abstract: A stretch bodysuit is provided which allows precise measurements of the proportions of the portion of the body enclosed by the bodysuit. Specific benchmarks and lines are positioned at key locations on the bodysuit. These benchmarks and lines may be aligned with or positioned to coincide with critical measuring points such as joints or other bodily features. The benchmarks act as a guide for using a tape measure. Alternatively, the bodysuit and the lines and benchmarks thereon may be produced in such a fashion as to facilitate optical scanning of the suit. Once the dimensions have been recorded, a computer program uses the dimensions to generate a pattern for the desired garment.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 2, 2002Assignee: E-Z Max Apparel Systems, Inc.Inventor: Gabriel S. Patent number: 6361506Abstract: A surgical measuring instrument includes a caliper having pin apertures formed therein for mounting on surgical pins in a first skeletal member. An adaptor includes pin apertures on a first portion for mounting on the surgical pins when the caliper is removed, and includes adaptor pins extending from a second portion for engagement with the caliper. A rod is connected to the caliper for indicating alignment and flexibility of a second skeletal member relative to the first skeletal member.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 2000Date of Patent: March 26, 2002Assignee: Sulzer Orthopedics Inc.Inventors: Paul L. Patent number: 6350281Abstract: A sizer measures a valve annulus to determine a size of an artificial heart valve to be sewn in the valve annulus during heart-valve replacement surgery. The sizer includes a support member and a resilient member. The support member has a size corresponding to the size of one of a plurality of artificial heart valves. The resilient member is disposed about the support member and has a resiliency substantially equal to the resiliency of a sewing ring of the artificial heart valve. Accordingly, when a surgeon inserts the sizer into a valve annulus, the resilient member conforms to the shape of the valve annulus much like the sewing ring will conform when positioned in the annulus and sewn in place. The surgeon is therefore able to determine more accurately the size of the annulus and, thereafter, to select a properly sized artificial valve.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1999Date of Patent: February 26, 2002Assignee: Edwards Lifesciences Corp.Inventor: Richard Rhee

Publication number: 20020020074Abstract: A sizer for assessing the geometry of a heart valve annulus including a handle portion for holding the sizer and a sizing portion. The sizing portion is preferably in the shape of an arch having an apex and two legs, each of which has a base adjoining the handle portion. The legs of the arched sizing portion are separated from each other by a predetermined distance that corresponds to the expected separation of commissures of a normal heart valve annulus. The height of the arch (measured from the base of each leg to the apex) corresponds to a predetermined leaflet height that approximates the expected height of a leaflet of a normal heart valve. For aortic valve reconstruction, the instrument is inserted into the opened aortic root following removal of the native valve tissue and is used to assess the distance between the commissures, the leaflet height, and the symmetry of the commissures of the exposed valve annulus.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 13, 2001Publication date: February 21, 2002Inventors: Jack W.
