  • Patent number: 7845091
Abstract: A brake pad measuring device is designed to be small enough to fit through various suspension components or many vehicles' wheel aperture and still maintain the ability to move in three-dimensions. The device is compact enough so that it may take an accurate reading of the thickness of a brake pad while being between the caliper housing and the brake pad backing plate of a vehicle. The device also comprises a spring so that once it is correctly placed, it may be manipulated in order to automatically get a reading of the thickness of a brake pad to the closest millimeter or 32nd of an inch by releasing the spring to cause a measurement to be automatically taken. Using this device, any user can get quick, reliable measurements for all four sets of brake pads in a matter of minutes and all without having to remove a single wheel from the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7040151
Abstract: A brake evaluation gauge is useful to determine a brake lining thickness and/or brake drum wear. Depending on the particular embodiment selected, one of a thickness measurement, a percentage of brake life left, a pass or a fail indication may be indicated for the thickness of the brake lining. A first end of a gauge is inserted between a brake shoe table and a brake drum of applied air brakes to provide this reading. Furthermore, a recess in the gauge is placed over a ridge created by wear of the brake lining on the brake drum. If the ridge contacts the interior surface of the recess, then excessive wear of the brake drum is indicated.

  • Patent number: 6931744
Abstract: A brake pad measuring tool is disclosed and functions to provide a quick visual indicator for determining brake pad wear condition in motor vehicles. The brake pad measuring tool includes a plurality of rigid bars which are attached in a reciprocal and rotatable manner via a coupling ring. Each of the rigid bars has a free end provided with a color-coded bar segment. The rigid bars also have descending incremental widths which correspond to a specific color cast by each color-coded bar segment, thus serving as a quick visual indicator for pad wear condition. The brake pad measuring tool allows for a brake pad's condition to be determined while the vehicle wheel is still attached to the hub.

  • Patent number: 6311554
Abstract: The invention provides a brake lining wear indicator for use with a brake pad/shoe having a friction lining secured to a plate. The indicator includes a flag positionable adjacent a thickness of the lining, and a base and a resilient member for clipping the indicator onto the plate. The base rigidly extends from the flag, generally perpendicular to the flag and is positionable against a side of the plate. The resilient member is for extending to the other side of the plate to clamp the base against the plate and secure the flag adjacent the thickness of the lining. The thickness of the lining can then be compared to the height of the flag to determine the amount of lining wear.

  • Patent number: 6230555
Abstract: A device for measuring the braking moment in a motor vehicle with disk brakes incorporates a measuring hub mounted on a wheel axle and connected with a wheel rim. Viewed in the radial direction, the hub is divided into an inner part close to the axle and an outer part that forms the marginal area of the measuring hub and surrounds the inner part concentrically. These two sections are connected to one another by ribs which extend radially, with sensors mounted thereon for measuring the bending stress acting on the ribs as a result of the introduction of a torque. In order to determine the braking moments acting on the disk brake without superimposition of other moments acting on the vehicle wheel, the brake disk of a braking device of the motor vehicle surrounds the outer part of the hub concentrically, and is fastened only to the outer part.

  • Patent number: 5469629
Abstract: A gage includes an elongate support arm at the end of a bar on which there is mounted a measurement and display module. A sliding anvil arm is spaced from the bar in parallel relationship and mounted on the module for sliding movements therewith on the bar. A right angle support arm extends from the free end of the elongate support arm, anvils being mounted on the free end support portion of the right angle support arm and at the end of the sliding anvil arm, both the anvils being arranged along a measurement axis. The support portion of the right angle support arm and the anvil mounted thereon together have a dimension along the measurement axis no greater than the smallest anticipated space between a wheel and a rotor to be measured so that the anvil may be positioned on one side of the rotor while the sliding anvil arm together with the module can be brought into abutment against the other side of the rotor to provide a reading of the thickness of the rotor without removal of the wheel from the vehicle.
