Abstract: An inductor design having a detection winding which is magnetically coupled to the existing winding and its induction voltage is used to cancel that of the existing winding. Having the induction voltage cancelled, the voltage across the existing winding represents a resistive voltage drop of the existing winding current. The detection winding is furthermore built with a non-inductive portion having a significantly higher DC resistance in proportion to that of the existing winding. This resistance proportion is insensitive against temperature variations when both the existing and the detection windings are built with the same material and subjected to the same environment. A reference current is fed through the detection winding to produce a reference resistive voltage drop which is used to cancel the resistive voltage drop across the existing winding. When a precise cancellation occurs, the existing winding current is known to be in exact proportion to the reference current.

  • Patent number: 7362206
Abstract: A variable transformer has an effective turns ratio that can be varied by electronic switching. By varying the effective turns ratio, the output voltage can be controlled precisely for a varying input voltage and load regulation. The variable transformer is a modular transformer in which one or more of the modules can be effectively removed from the variable transformer by turning on an ac switch so as to short-circuit the secondary winding of the module. When the ac switch is on, the rectifiers of the module must be turned off, if they are synchronous rectifiers. If they are diodes, they will be off by being back-biased when the ac switch is on. Improved transformer modules are shown having reduced leakage inductance.

  • Patent number: 7317374
Abstract: An inductor with self-damping properties for use in multiple applications including for high power broadband frequency applications is provided by a coil having an input end and an output end and wound about a core of magnetically permeable material and an eddy current generator incorporated either at the time of manufacture or post manufacturing. The core can be air (e.g., a hollow coil of wire). Alternative core materials are iron, iron powder, steel laminations and other appropriate materials. The core may be incorporated into some form of frame whether I shaped, U shaped, E shaped or of an encapsulated shape arrangement. The inductor's Q value may be changed selectively by deliberately inducing eddy currents in preferred locations. The eddy currents are induced into the inductors and have the effect of introducing a back EMF which is designed and scaled appropriately to adjust the Q value at the desired frequency resulting is less phase distortion.
