Patent number: 6396380Abstract: A fuse box for motor vehicles includes a housing that is adapted to contain electrical fuses mounted to a common busbar for connecting one end of the fuses directly to a pole of an electric battery in the vehicle. The housing includes lateral surfaces for providing torsional protection to the fuses against twisting or bending when the nuts holding the fuses in place are tightened. Screening zones are defined in the housing for screening off fusable portions of the fuses so that melted material is prevented from migrating into the housing beyond the screening zone where the melted material may cause damage. Mechanical coding structures are provided in the housing to ensure that only cable terminals having a shape corresponding to the coding structures can be installed in selected regions of the fuse box. This prevents inadvertent misuse of cross-connection of cables having inadequate or excessive current carrying capacity.Type: GrantFiled: January 25, 1999Date of Patent: May 28, 2002Assignee: TRW Automotive Electronics & Components GmbH & Co. Patent number: 5841338Abstract: A fuse combination in which a group of fused elements are placed on an insulative support. The support is bent into a U-shape carrying the fuse elements with it. Contacts at the ends of the fuse elements extend beyond the corresponding edges of the support and are adapted to be inserted into a socket. To make the combination, the fuse elements are stamped out of a metal plate which has a thin central section. This thin section becomes the fusible portions of the fuse elements. A band at either end of the fuse elements connects them so that they can be handled as a unit. They are then placed on the support, secured thereto, and a preferably transparent cover is placed over the fusible portions.Type: GrantFiled: April 15, 1997Date of Patent: November 24, 1998Assignee: Sumitomo Wiring Systems, Ltd.Inventor: Jun Yasukuni

Patent number: 5409402Abstract: A plug-in fuse device can be handled without special tools and permits convenient replacement of a burnt-out fuse element. The device has a rigid housing with a pair of plug portions. Each plug portion is shaped to plug into a socket and carries a fuse assembly which includes a pair of terminals for engagement with socket elements, a fuse element between the terminals, and a pair of conductive contacts. The terminals extend from one end surface of the plug portion, and the contacts are located at an axially opposite end surface. The plug portions are connected at their contact-bearing surfaces, and the terminals of one plug portion extend in one axial direction and the terminals of the other plug portion, in the opposite axial direction. The plug portions are also offset to different sides of the general plane of the housing. Thus, when either plug portion is plugged into the socket, its contact-bearing surface is available for continuity testing.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1994Date of Patent: April 25, 1995Inventors: Roger M. Patent number: 5197443Abstract: A fuel system for a diesel truck has a first fuel tank (80) and a second fuel tank (82). A siphon line (90) is open to the lower portions of the tanks and extends above the upper portions of both tanks. A manually operated priming pump (98) is used to remove air from the siphon line. Fuel is delivered from the first tank to the engine of the truck through a fluid delivery line (84). As fuel is drawn from the first tank, the fuel levels in the tanks equalize as the result of flow through the siphon line. Fuel not consumed by the engine is returned through an overflow line (86). The returning fuel is warmed as a result absorbing energy during pumping and having been in close proximity to the engine. A three-way control valve (88) directs the warm returning fuel to either the first or second fuel tank in response to the temperature sensed by a temperature sensor (94).Type: GrantFiled: June 13, 1991Date of Patent: March 30, 1993Assignee: Parker Hannifin CorporationInventor: David H. Patent number: 5140491Abstract: Electrical transient surge protection of electrical equipment downstream from a power source plus safeguarding of apparatus for providing such surge protection against failure at high currents or high temperature. Non-linear over-voltage means, such as varistors, function to clip transient voltage surges and to shunt resulting currents to ground so as to protect watt-hour meters and downstram loads from electrical surges. Adjacent arc-extinguishing components aid in safeguarding varistors or similar over-voltage means from potentially catastrophic destruction in the event of extreme over-heating from unusually frequent or prolonged surges. Such apparatus may be located in such diverse places as a power line weatherhead, a watt-hour meter base, an adapter between a meter base and its normal mounting socket, or a utility panel having such a socket, or in a circuit-breaker panel or even an electrical outlet receptacle downstream of the meter and upstream of metered electrical loads.Type: GrantFiled: February 21, 1991Date of Patent: August 18, 1992Inventor: Edward F.
