  • Patent number: 8466772
Abstract: On the track of a potentiometer a resistive path of thin film is deposited or a foil is bonded to a matched substrate and a parallel path is formed of discrete contact straps extending from the resistive path. The resistive path has a protecting coating and the wiper is moving on abrasion resistant contact straps. This design enables application of high precision and stability resistor technologies in the production of variable resistors destined for long service life. It enables also, in high precision applications, by maintaining the linearity of the output versus input function, a two-wire connection to the variable resistor used as a position sensor.

  • Patent number: 6275140
Abstract: A rotary variable resistor includes a substrate made of synthetic resin; a first terminal made of metal, embedded in the substrate, and leading from a side surface of the substrate; an annular collector formed on the surface of the substrate; a resistor formed on the surface of the substrate; and a sliding element sliding on the resistor and the collector. In the rotary variable resistor, an exposed part exposed at the surface of the substrate is formed on the first terminal within a range of the width of the annular collector. Since the exposed part of the first terminal is connected to the annular collector within the width thereof, a space for forming a leader of a conventional collector and a compact rotary variable resistor can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 6078248
Abstract: In spite of small size, a rotary manipulation type variable resistor capable of preventing electromigration when used in direct-current electric field is obtained. Moreover, the process of forming the case while inserting the resistance substrate and current collector is simplified. It includes a resistance element layer disposed on a first insulating substrate, a conductive layer disposed on a second insulating substrate, and a slider having a first contact point contacting with the surface of the resistance element layer and a second contact point contacting with the surface of the conductive layer. The conductive layer is a printed layer containing conductive powder and binder, and the surface of the resistance element layer and the surface of the conductive layer are positioned mutually at a step.

  • Patent number: 5525955
Abstract: An annular resistor member having two non-contact ends is overlaid and adhered on the surface of a base, and a rotational shaft located at the central portion of the resistor member is pivotally axially supported via a bearing. A bent electrode arm is fitted on the rotational shaft, and is connected to an output terminal via the rotational shaft or a connection means. A movable electrode, which opposes to the resistor member via a gap, is integrally formed on the end portion of the electrode arm, and a capacitor is formed between the movable electrode and the resistor member. In the above structure, when an AC power supply is flowed across the two ends of the resistor member, the capacitor is formed between the movable electrode and the resistor member, and an attenuated voltage is generated on the movable electrode.

  • Patent number: 4527147
Abstract: An arcuate film resistor is defined on an insulating substrate. During use, a high voltage is impressed across end terminals connected to the arcuate film resistor. A central electrode is located on the insulated substrate at a point which is surrounded by the film resistor. The central electrode is formed of a non-film resistor material and has superior adherability to the substrate. A disk-shaped film resistor is deposited at the center of the central electrode and second ring-like film resistor is formed around the outer periphery of the central electrode. A rotatable slider has a first contact positioned over the disk-shaped film resistor and a second contact which slides along the arcuate film resistor. A portion of the voltage from the arcuate film resistor can thus be transferred to the central electrode. The disk-shaped film resistor located on the central electrode improves the contact between the slider at the central electrode.

  • Patent number: 4365230
Abstract: Variable resistor comprises a lead screw 12 rotatably mounted to substrate 42 by conductive mounts 18, 18' and engaging a one-piece stamped and formed sheet metal slider 16 movable along circuit trace 20 in response to rotation of the screw 12. The lead screw 12 is a conductive plastic and thus acts as a resistance element, the resistance between the mounts 18, 18' and the circuit trace 20 being varied by rotating the screw 12. Mounts 18, 18' have spring-loaded arms 34, 36 which releasably retain the lead screw 12 so it may be replaced if it is desired to change the resistance limits of the device.

  • Patent number: 4329676
Abstract: A potentiometer providing a variable electrical resistance between input and output terminals for use in electronic circuits, as for volume control, light control, instrumentation control or the like. A potentiometer includes a housing assembly comprised of a cover assembled to a base. An electrical wiper is mounted to a rotor assembled to the cover and has a contact portion movable along a C-shaped resistive strip on the base. Stops limit the extremes of movement of the wiper with respect to the resistive strip. An annular seal disposed between the cover and a rotating portion of the rotor is effective to keep out dirt and other particulate matter from the potentiometer and provides continuous brake friction upon rotation of the rotor. In one form of the potentiometer, the housing assembly includes a body located between the cover and base and a switch mechanism is operably connected to the rotor to selectively locate an electrical contact in an on or off position.

  • Patent number: 4213113
Abstract: An electrical resistor element and method of manufacturing the same. The element may comprise a fixed resistor or may be the resistive and collector component of a variable resistor. In either case, the element comprises, at least as a portion thereof, a substrate comprising an insulating substrate injection molded from ceramic-glass frit material and organic binder and lubricating material. A layer of resistive material and a layer of conducting termination material are each deposited on the unfired substrate. The organic materials in the substrate and its termination and resistive layers are substantially "burned out" prior to simultaneously co-firing the substrate and the deposited resistive and termination layers. In the case of fixed resistors, the element may be molded as a half-shell arranged to receive leads extending from opposite ends of the half-shell molding and attached by soldering or other means to the termination areas.
