The apparatus for carrying out the process may include a pretreatment station for supplying the treatment substance, a pulp feed device designed for pulp, a pulp feed device designed for pulp and foam suspensions, and/or a fiber separation station having a vacuum conveyor.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is provided for continuous dehydration of sludge wherein, prior to dehydration, water is mechanically removed from the sludge, and the thus obtained sludge of cutting consistency is mixed with heated spheres. Dehydration is carried out at reduced pressure, wherein the sludge from which water has been mechanically removed is intimately mixed with the heated spheres in order to increase the heat capacity of the sludge. The dehydrated sludge and the cooled spheres are then separated from each other, the dehydrated sludge is removed, while the cooled spheres are reheated and subsequently added to fresh sludge that is to be dehydrated. The spheres are partly heated by means of water vapor coming from the sludge and partly by means of steam. The spheres are made from steel, having a diameter of 8-16 mm. The pressure in the system ranges form approx. 2 bars to approx. 0.05 bar. An apparatus is also provided for carrying out the method.

A drying chamber is established between a housing and a central body which is coaxially positioned through the center of the housing. Located within the drying chamber are a plurality of balls which form a drying bed. A screw auger is coaxially positioned through the center of the central body to circulate the balls through the drying chamber by moving them from the bottom to the top of the drying chamber where they are redeposited into the bed. A rotatable balls dispersing chute is coupled to the screw auger at the upper end of the central body to evenly distribute balls over the top of the bed of balls as it rotates.

    Abstract: A method of maximizing net water loss from various sludges in the outdoor environment to stabilize or to reduce the volume and weight of sludges. Specifically, this method comprises drying a layer of wet sludge by surface evaporation, mixing a sufficient amount of additional wet sludge to the previously-dried sludge layer to form a sludge mixture having a water content at which surface evaporation is maximized, and drying the sludge mixture by surface evaporation or by periodical tilling or both. Additionally, the sludge surface is sealed by light compaction in the event of imminent precipitation to minimize rainwater retention and infiltration. In addition to stabilization, this method may be used as an effective pretreatment step towards other sludge treatment processes to drastically reduce the sludge treatment cost, based on the reduction of the sludge volume, sludge weight, and sludge water content.
