Abstract: A system and method is described in which energy source identification information is impressed upon electrical conductors employed in an electrical energy distribution network. The present invention negates the concept that electrical energy in a power distribution system is or should be treated as a fungible quantity. The present invention provides a mechanism by which end-users are rendered capable of determining and requesting that the electrical energy being provided to them is derived from renewable resources in general or from specific renewable resources. The present invention also enhances the capabilities for monitoring and controlling the production of greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide.

  • Patent number: 7626497
Abstract: A system for detecting the contact of vegetation or other objects with a power line conductor and that may provide an automated notification thereof is provided. In one embodiment, the system may assess one or more power line communication links to determine baseline performance parameters thereof and set associated communication thresholds. The system may also include sensors for measuring wind speed, power line voltages, and/or other data. In one embodiment, the measured data may continuously be time stamped and stored in memory. Sensed data such as voltage and/or wind speed is analyzed during the time of a degradation of a communication link. If there is a correlation in the occurrence of increased wind speed or decrease in voltage and one or more degradations of a communication channel, a notification may be transmitted.

  • Patent number: 7583952
Abstract: An access pointer for interconnecting a power line communication (PLC) network of a home network and a wireless network and a method therefor are provided. When data is received from the PLC network through media access control of a data link layer, data on upper layers above a network layer in the received data is converted into a format suitable to a wireless network layer. The converted data is transmitted to the wireless network through the media access control of the data link layer. Accordingly, the PLC network and the wireless network are easily interconnected.

  • Patent number: 7576643
Abstract: A sensor for measuring a variable, in particular a physical variable, includes at least one converter element converting the variable into an electrical signal. At least one electronic signal processing unit conditions and/or processes the electrical signal to provide a sensor signal. The at least one electronic signal processing unit has at least one diagnosis device. An interface passes on the sensor signal through a connection, in particular a cable connection, to an electrical device, in particular a control device. The diagnosis device causes a fault signal instead of the sensor signal to be present at the interface when a fault occurs, for clearly distinguishing a fault at the interface from a processing fault. A circuit having such a sensor and a method for operating the sensor and the circuit are also provided.

  • Patent number: 7551074
Abstract: Field devices are commonly used in unprotected environments, which means that these field devices and the conductor pairs connecting the field devices to the input modules/output modules of an automation installation are exposed to significant climatic and environmental factors. These factors have a detrimental effect on the transmission quality of the signals to be transferred between field devices and modules, which may result in erroneous measurements and dangerous operating states during control of a technical process. Measures to simplify monitoring of the transmission medium are proposed.

  • Patent number: 7537172
Abstract: A system for communicating across conventional HVAC wiring is provided. The system includes a communication device having a communication module capable of inducing low power, high frequency current signals into a single control wire coupling, for example, a thermostat with a compressor. The communication module includes a power supply module that draws power sufficient to operate the communication module from the existing HVAC wiring, so as to eliminate any need for batteries or external power sources. A second communication module may be coupled to the single control wire. The second communication module operates as a transceiver sending communication signals to, and receiving communication signals from, the communication module. In one embodiment, the communication module is disposed within a building, for example coupled to an electronic thermostat, while the second communication module is disposed outside the building near the compressor.

  • Patent number: RE41871
Abstract: A building alarm system includes addressable notification appliances connected to a system controller, with each notification appliance having a status indicator and an alarm indicator. The status indicator, such as an LED, provides for system test modes that avoid disruption of building occupants. To test the alarm system, the system controller selects which notification appliances to operate in response to a test alarm input and communicates to each selected appliance an instruction to operate its associated status indicator without operating its associated audible or flashing visible alarm indicators. In a troubleshooting mode, the system controller polls each of the notification appliances and receives an answer in response to the poll from any of the appliances. The controller operates the LED indicators of those appliances which answer the poll.
