Patent number: 9456301Abstract: A network tracking server-based service that implements an efficient network management of location requests associated with tracking a prisoner's wireless tracking device. The tracking server initiates location requests associated with a given prisoner (or the like) tracking device in a trustworthy, but much more efficient and manageable technique, from the perspective of the network. Network management of prisoner device tracking is made efficient when inside a given geofence, but once outside the prescribed geofence a more detailed inquisition is immediately launched—even before the top of the hour (or whenever the typical periodic location request occur). From a management perspective, once detected to no longer be inside (and thus is outside) an expected or assigned geofence, the prisoner tracking device is presumed less trustworthy, and thus then periodic location requests to the tracking device are initiated.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 2013Date of Patent: September 27, 2016Assignee: Telecommunication Systems, Inc.Inventor: Paul C. Patent number: 8816851Abstract: Methods and apparatuses of distributed lighting control are disclosed. One embodiment includes a lighting apparatus. The lighting apparatus includes a light, a sensor associated with the light for sensing a change of light intensity per unit of time greater than a sense threshold, and a controller. The controller is operative to determine if the light is within an area, activate the light at a preselected area light intensity if a light associated with the sensor is within the area and the sensed change of light intensity per unit of time is greater than the sense threshold, and if the light is not within the area, then the light only activates if motion is additionally detected, thereby increasing light intensity over a target area.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2013Date of Patent: August 26, 2014Assignee: enLighted. Patent number: 8779895Abstract: A zone location system with ultrasound US transmitters S1, S2, S3 located in respective zones Z1, Z2, Z3 such as rooms of a building B. Preferably, the US transmitters are time-multiplexed so that each of them in turn transmits a US signal US with a unique ID code USID represented therein. The portable tag PT includes an ultrasound receiver USR arranged to receive the US signal. Based on the received US signal, the portable tag PT measures a strength of the received US signal. The portable tag PT also measures a parameter related to a movement of the portable tag PT, e.g. a Doppler shift based on the received US signal. Further, the portable tag extracts the USID. Then it transmits a wireless Radio Frequency signal RFS with its own ID PTID, the USID and first and second data values D1, D2 representing the signal strength and the movement related parameters.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2008Date of Patent: July 15, 2014Assignee: Universitetet I OsloInventor: Sverre Holm

Publication number: 20140184406Abstract: Techniques are described for providing remote device (e.g., thermostat, lighting, appliance, etc.) control and/or energy monitoring. A system monitors sensor data captured by one or more sensors that sense attributes relevant to user presence at one or more monitored properties and status of one or more energy consuming devices associated with the one or more monitored properties. The system analyzes the monitored sensor data and the monitored device status with respect to a set of one or more rules and performs an operation related to controlling the one or more energy consuming devices based on the analysis of the monitored sensor data and the monitored device status with respect to the set of one or more rules.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 7, 2014Publication date: July 3, 2014Applicant: Alarm.com IncorpratedInventors: Stephen Scott Trundle, Alison Jane Slavin, Jean-Paul Martin, David James Hutz

Patent number: 8755848Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device, and method for controlling power saving features at the mobile device. A processor in the mobile device may be used to establish a network connection with a server in a first network. The mobile device may also include a transceiver that initiates transmission of a message to the server to determine if an incoming call request has been received via a second network. Advantageously, the transceiver is in a low power mode of operation for a selectable time interval when not communicating with the server.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2005Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: QUALCOMM IncorporatedInventors: Nikhil Jain, Avneesh Agrawal

Patent number: 8749348Abstract: One disclosed method involves providing a first device comprising a sensor configured to sense a stimulus experienced by the first device, a controller configured to process data received from the sensor and thereby obtain processed sensor data, a transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit the processed data, and a battery configured to supply power to at least the controller and the transmitter. The first device is operated in a first operational mode in which the sensor, the controller, and the transmitter are used at least occasionally to obtain and transmit processed data. When the battery is in a low power condition, the first device is operated in a second operational mode wherein the sensor, controller, and transmitter are not used to obtain and transmit processed sensor data, but wherein the first device at least occasionally transmits a signal that indicates a low power condition of the battery.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 2012Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: NIKE, Inc.Inventor: Thomas P. Patent number: 8736426Abstract: Systems for identifying and categorizing distributed devices, e.g., lighting fixtures and thermostats, is disclosed. In an embodiment, a user (200) sends a low power discovery message to devices (201) using a portable programming tool (100). The devices (201) within range respond with identification information. The portable programming tool (100) organizes the responses by proximity and sends a “flash” message to the device with the closest perceived proximity. That device responds with a visual or audible signal (202), allowing the user (200) to determine whether that device is the one intended for selection. If so, the user initiates a store routine in which identification information, including category information, is stored in one or more locations, such as, the selected device (201), the portable programming tool (100), and/or a central or local controller (1100). The identification and categorization can, for example, be used to automate load shedding and to reduce energy consumption.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 2013Date of Patent: May 27, 2014Assignee: Pyramid Meriden Inc.Inventor: George Bucci
