  • Patent number: 8669876
Abstract: An above-water system provides automatic alerting for possible drowning victims in swimming pools or the like. One or more electro-optical sensors are placed above the pool surface. Sequences of images are digitized and analyzed electronically to determine whether there are humans within the image, and whether such humans are moving in a manner that would suggest drowning. Effects due to glint, refraction, and variations in light, are offset automatically by the system. If a potential drowning incident is detected, the system produces an alarm sound, and/or a warning display, so that an operator can determine whether action must be taken.

  • Patent number: 8659432
Abstract: A security system for automatically detecting and signaling the event of a person falling overboard from a vessel into a body of water includes a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag worn by each passenger onboard a vessel, one or more RFID readers placed surrounding the hull of the vessel, a control unit onboard the vessel wherein the RFID readers are individually connected, and an alarm system. When a person who is wearing the RFID tag falls overboard, he or she would inevitably pass through one or more of the RFID readers placed surrounding the hull of the vessel. One or more RFID readers read the information contained in the RFID tag, and said information is transmitted from the RFID reader to the control unit. The control unit records the time and location of the event, and activates an alarm system for facilitating the rescue of the person.

Abstract: Electronic Tags are mounted on swimmers to reduce their risk of drowning by identifying when their heads are underwater for periods of time which may indicate a dangerous submersion situation, and for triggering corresponding alerts and alarms. In this method, each monitored person is equipped with a lightweight electronic Tag worn on the head that communicates with monitors that issue the alerts and alarms, including audible and visible distress signals. The Tags comprise electrodes mounted on each side of a swimmer's head that close a circuit when said swimmer's nose or mouth is in the water. After a certain period of time, if the circuit is still closed, an alarm is sent to said monitors. The monitors, in turn, communicate the alarms to receivers used by supervisory personnel, such as lifeguards or parents.

Abstract: A personal water safety device includes at least three base stations, at least one water sensing device, and an alarm apparatus. The at least one water sensing device wirelessly communicates with each of the at least three base stations. The alarm apparatus wirelessly communicates with each of the at least three base stations. Each water sensing device is worn by a swimmer and is triggered to measure elapsed time when the swimmer submerges in water, and transmits the measured time to the at least three base stations. The alarm apparatus receives the measured time transmitted from each of the at least three base stations, and generates an alarm when the measured time of one of the at least water sensing device exceeds a predetermined time limit.

Abstract: The apparatus of the present invention has a shell, an indicator and straps. The shell has flanges at the top and bottom, respectively, constricting the hole size at the ends of the shell. The shell can be comprised of a body and a cap. The indicator is in telescoping engagement with the shell. The indicator has two ends. The first end of the indicator protrudes from the second end of the shell. A weight is at the second end of the indicator. The weight has a sidewall with an outer periphery greater in size than the inner periphery of the shell ends. The straps are used to secure the apparatus to a person. The indicator extends from the shell when the person enters the water. The indicator, aided by the weight, retracts into the shell when the person exits the water. The shell can have wings.

Abstract: The present invention describes a rescue light with a LED light source that meets a minimum requirement of 0.75 candela (cd) of intensity, over a full hemisphere of visibility, with a duration of 8 hours or more. The invention requires only 3 volts of battery power from relatively small batteries, making the invention small and lightweight. In one favorite embodiment the LED is a specially constructed device that uses a blue LED die enclosed with a uniform layer of phosphor on the outer surface of the LED body, which provides an equally bright white light in all directions. Due to the low power requirements of the LED, the device can easily produce white light over an entire hemisphere at the required brightness level for longer than the required amount of time.
