Patent number: 4333096Abstract: A seed planter monitor is used with a traveling seed planter operable to periodically dispense seeds in each of a plurality of rows. The monitor, preferably a microcomputer device, comprises individual row counters for counting the seeds planted in each row. The monitor determines the row having the highest deviation from the average number of seeds planted per row. Whenever the maximum deviation exceeds a predetermined limit, an alarm signals an error condition to the planter operator. The monitor also senses and warns the operator of any stoppage occurring in any of the rows within a relatively short stoppage distance. Planting data is displayed to the operator during planting.Type: GrantFiled: July 27, 1979Date of Patent: June 1, 1982Assignee: Field Electronics Inc.Inventors: John P. Jenkins, Stephen W. Patent number: 4307390Abstract: A seed monitoring apparatus for use with a seed planting machine includes a seed sensor comprising a housing forming a substantially tubular passageway and mounting a light source and three photosensitive elements arranged substantially in a triangular configuration. The arrangement of the light source and the triangular photosensor configuration is such that a seed passing through the tubular passageway will momentarily obscure the passage of light to the photosensor the apex of the triangle, if at all, before obscuring the passage of light to either of the photosensors forming the base of the triangle. The monitoring circuit includes two signal paths in which different methods of counting are used to produce different numbers of pulses in response to signals from the three photosensors. One or the other of these signal paths is selected automatically in accordance with the rate at which seeds are detected.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1979Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Dickey-john CorporationInventors: David E. Patent number: 4284987Abstract: A tip-over warning system for vehicles of the articulated type utilizes a swinging pendulum pivoted in a frame which is mounted on and simulates the stability triangle of the vehicle. The pivotal connection of the pendulum is at a scale distance relative to the frame corresponding to the location of the vehicle center of gravity. The side arms of the frame are variable in length and pivoted, allowing the apex of the frame to move. The apex is moved by a servo motor in accordance with the steering angle of the vehicle. The pendulum and frame are connected in an electrical circuit including a current source and an alarm device. When the pendulum touches a side arm of the frame the circuit is completed, thus energizing the alarm device.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of AgricultureInventors: Harry G. Patent number: 4239010Abstract: A seed planting apparatus comprises a mobile planting machine to be connected to a tractor or similar vehicle, and having a seed hopper for containing a supply of seeds to be planted. A seed outlet on the hopper feeds a seed dispensing apparatus for delivering seeds to the ground to be planted. A microwave seed sensing apparatus is disposed in a path of travel for seeds discharged from the hopper for detecting the seeds and producing an observable indication to the operator of the presence of seeds in the path of travel. The seed planting apparatus may also include magnetic seed treatment apparatus. The microwave sensing apparatus may therefore be connected in a control circuit for actuating the magnetic field in response to the presence of seeds and for producing an indication to an operator of the passage of seeds.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1979Date of Patent: December 16, 1980Assignee: Dickey-john CorporationInventor: Raymond D. Patent number: 4238790Abstract: A monitoring arrangement comprises units for sensing the flow of seeds through each coulter of a sowing machine and indicating units installed on a part of the machine where the coulters are supported. A common, central unit to indicate an interruption occurring in any coulter is also provided, acting via a common electric conduit that feeds signals from the indicating units to the central unit. The invention suggests one indicating unit for a maximum of three sensing units but preferably the number of the indicating units is half that of the sensing units while the number of the latter is identical with that of the coulters. The arrangement may further include a unit for counting fault locations, connected to the indicating units by the common conduit. At least some of the sensing units may be in the form of piezoelectric sensors that respond to the impingement of the seeds within the coulters.Type: GrantFiled: July 19, 1978Date of Patent: December 9, 1980Assignee: Mazogazdasagi Gepkiserleti IntezetInventors: Barnabas Balogh, Jozsef Erdelyi, Zsolt Fabian, Vazul Rusz, Mihaly Samu, Jozsef Szente

Patent number: 4159474Abstract: A depth indicator is associated with a tractor. The depth indicator includes an above depth indicating circuit, an at depth indicating circuit and a below depth indicating circuit, with each circuit including visual indicators which are associated with each other so that once energized, a visual indicator will remain energized until another visual indicator is energized.A tractor mounted ripper tool employs a programmable control device to change the angular attitude of the ripper blade at a preselected depth. The control device positions a diverter valve to alternately apply fluid power between a depth positioning power cylinder and a pitch positioning power cylinder such that the attitude of the ripper blade will automatically be changed between a penetrating mode and a ripping mode at a preselected depth. A depth control circuit having a depth sensor switch and a depth selector switch detects the vertical displacement of the ripper tool and provides a command at a preselected depth.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1976Date of Patent: June 26, 1979Assignee: American Tractor Equipment CorporationInventor: Darrel M. Patent number: 4149163Abstract: A wireless seed detecting and monitoring apparatus includes one or more transmitter units mounted at the seed planter and a receiver unit mounted in a monitor console located at a remote location. Seeds being planted produce a signal which modulates an r-f transmitted signal during the planting operation. A receiver is responsive to the r-f transmitted signal and detects the modulated signal information corresponding to seeds being planted. This detected signal is then delivered to monitoring circuitry to indicate the operation of the seed planter.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1977Date of Patent: April 10, 1979Assignee: Dickey-john CorporationInventor: George H. Patent number: 4137529Abstract: A calibrated tuneable monitor for use with multi-row planting apparatus includes means for sensing the number of seeds delivered to furrows formed in a field and controlling an indicator to give a visual readout to the operator of the planting apparatus as to whether the number of seeds planted is at least equal to a predetermined minimum value which is preset by a selector dial. The seed monitor system has a DC coupled monostable circuit for producing a pulse of given pulse width for each pulse produced by a seed sensor. The pulse from the DC coupled monostable circuit is then integrated and formed into a voltage which is proportional to the rate at which pulses are received. This voltage is then compared in a voltage comparator circuit to control the operation of an indicator.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1974Date of Patent: January 30, 1979Assignee: Dickey-john CorporationInventors: James H. Patent number: RE30539Abstract: An implement, preferrably a harrow having a row of soil working members mounted on upwardly extending shafts, has spraying nozzles for dispensing material on the ground adjacent the rear of the soil working members. The nozzles communicate with liquid material under pressure. The implement is coupled to a tractor and the operator of the tractor can monitor the material being sprayed by various devices in an electrical circuit that leads to the tractor. Wires are positioned to be bridged by the spray and indicator lights on the tractor dash board provide a visual signal when material is sprayed by each nozzle. Similarly, a micro switch or camera, or other actuation means can be located adjacent each nozzle to provide a signal for each nozzle spray. The nozzles communicate with an elongated pipe and the pipe is supported on the implement frame with adjusting means to change the direction of spray by the nozzles.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 1978Date of Patent: March 10, 1981Inventor: Cornelis van der Lely
